Labor? Stupid Question

First, I have already called my Dr. and left a message-

I woke up in the middle of the night with cramping and had diarrhea.  I was able to go back to bed but still had cramps on and off.

This morning I am having what I believe are contactions- feels like a menstural cramp in my lower pelvic region, like everything is contracting.  Could this be labor?  My water has not broke so I'm not sure if I should go in yet.

Like I said, pending a call back from my Dr. I just can't remember from our classes if I wait for my water to break before going in or not.

Re: Labor? Stupid Question

  • Going in isn't dependent on your water breaking. (Well, if your water does break then you should talk to your Dr - they'll probably want you to head in - but just because your water hasn't broken doesn't mean it's not time to go in.) Time your contractions. My Dr. told me to head in when they were five minutes apart and one minute in duration for about an hour.

  • My Ob's policy is the standard 5-1-1-..contractions that are approx 5 mins apart, lasting for 1 min for at least 1 hr...he also said they need to be PAINFUL contractions to count..If I can talk and laugh through them, it's not active labor...

  • I'm in the exact same boat except I didn't have diarrhea. Mine are coming every once in a good while right now but are definitely painful. My midwife has always said like the previous posters to wait for the 5-1-1 so that's what I'm doing. I actually might go for walk to see if I can make the contractions more regular.

  • Well, I ended up going in. I was having 5 an hour but were not horrible, pretty much like a menstural cramp.  For the first hour of monitoring they came in and were going to let me go because none of them were showing up on the monitor.  I told the nurse I was a little frustrated (not with them) because what I was feeling wasn't normal and I def. thought they were contractions and if the were not contractions, I have no idea what I should be looking for and what abnormal pains are actually of concern.

The nurse was really sweet and sat at the bed until I had the next one.  She felt my stomach and said she could feel my uterus tightening some but not as much as they typically do with contractions.  So, she moved the monitor position and monitored for another hour which is when they say the 5 contractions.

She called my Dr. and since I'm not 37 week until Monday and have an induction due to pre-e scheduled for the 17th, she had them go ahead and give me a shot to stop contractions and try to hold out until the 17th.

I'm back home now and have had two contractions since being out of the hospital.  I know one thing for sure, this little girl is about as stubborn as her mom and dad!

I have to say I'm happy to have this last week still to finish up what I need before we are scheduled to go in on the 17th.  Today made me realize what I don't have together yet!
