December 2012 Moms

From one FTM to others

hey ladies ihad my LO 6 weeks ago! I am an Oct 2012 momma. Thought I would send a quick post to you ladies. as always take any reccs with caution but this is just from my own observation so far!

- when family  visit make sure you take a break- walk away it will be hard to do but do it! A few minutes away to nap from LO to keep you sane is good

- have LO sleep in their crib from day one - bring crib in your room if you must

- get a routine where you shower in the morning have a cup of tea, coffee or  juice even if you wait to eat breakfast once LO naps in the morning

 - 20 minutes after DH comes home, take even just a 15- 30 min break from them go to another room you will be tempted to not let DH have control of baby

- get a paper calendar to put all doc appts on.

- get a paper calendar to put doc appts on

-plan a get together with a friend if only for an hour or two  when your LO is one month

Above all trust your gut!

Again, I am a first time just my 2 cents

Yes, trust your gut!  Exactly.  OP talks a lot of away time from baby... not my style.  I was satisfied for a 20 to 30 min shower each day... then give me my baby back.

Soooo true.  I don't understand the "it will be hard to walk away, but do it anyway!"  WHY?  If something doesn't feel right and natural to you, don't feel pressured to do it, ever.

No one knows what is best for you and your baby but you and your baby.

  • Being a soon to be ftm myself, I don't know how I'm going to feel about being away from my Skye, but I think, and this is just MHO, OP is trying to say to make sure you take time for yourself.  I think we all know that whether you're a ftm or a mtm you don't always get to take care of ourselves.  But like I said that's just the impression I'm getting.  Go ahead and flame away.

  • I was super controlling when LO1 was born. I had really bad anxiety and probably should have taken something to help calm me down. Long story short, I wish someone would have told me to go lay down and let them handle the baby for an hour.

I think OP was just trying to be helpful, but you should also not do anything that feels uncomfortable to you as a mother. I think it can be hard to find a balance in the beginning. Based on my own experiences, I will definitely try to let others help me out more this time. I know I will need it for my mental state!

  • Trusting my gut tells me that I don't need to put DD in her crib just yet.  She sleeps better on my chest, or DH's... And so do we.

Bed sharing isn't for everyone. But neither is putting LO in the crib alone from day one when they are used to being so close to mom.

ETA: If it doesn't feel right or natural to walk away from my baby, I don't.  Mothers have instinct for a reason.  And it's not there to be ignored.
