Parenting after 35

Just saying hi...

I was lurking on this board today and thought I would say hello. I had DS at age 38 and I will be 40 in a few days. I work full time and tend to be quite busy and exhausted! I find that I am struggling a bit with managing a marriage, a full time career and a young child and I am always wondering if I am doing any of this good enough. Being an older Mom I notice that I often have a much different perspective about raising children and tend to be somewhat old fashioned in that regard. Anyway, I hope to be checking in on this board more often and getting to know some of you.

Re: Just saying hi...

  • Hi and welcome.

I don't think being "old-fashioned" is necessarily a bad thing. I think one of the nice things about being older is that you can consider some of the old-fashioned approaches, and the more current ideas and pick and choose what suits you best.

I find it very easy to pick and choose the parenting approaches that best suit us, and I think part of that is down to me being older and more confident in myself, than I was at say 20.

  • That is so very true. I always think that every family has to decide what works best for them. Thank you.

  • Hi! I could have written this post, except that I'll be 38 in a few days. I think we're all doing the best we can and part of that is the wondering ... like, if it's a concern then you're probably doing better than you think you are!

Welcome to the oldies board! :)

  • Hello and welcome! I hear you on the managing and juggling everything, even though I only go to work a few hours a day. Financially it's very hard too.  Sometimes the exhaustion of it makes me wish I were younger!

But in a way I'm glad I had my son at age 39, because I'm much more mature and patient than I was in my 20s.
