Preemies

Hip dysplasia Ultrasound ?

I came across the twins discharge notes again yesterday that we were given a copy of when we got to the Peds office a week after we were discharged (another story) I realized that the NICU suggested an ultrasound at 46 weeks for hip displasia on my low birth preemie (one was 3.3 the other 7.6lbs) I mentioned this to our doc at their 4mth appt & he thought she was fine but did think the test would be good still to do.

Has anyone had this test done? how was it for the baby? Did it take long? Just trying to know what to expect as I did not ask this yesterday.

TIA

Re: Hip dysplasia Ultrasound ?

  • We had one done, but it was DH that took her while I stayed home with the other.  Our pedi suggested it b/c she was first born (baby A) and breech, so those two things are common with hip displasia.  I'll ask him later, but I hope someone else has an answer for you.

ETA:  DH said everything was quick and baby was fine during it.  They just had to position her and put some U/S goo on.  Baby didn't cry or anything.  And this was also DH's first time taking a baby anywhere without me, if that tells you anything.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Thanks for the info. The hospital is 50 min away so I have to take both.

  • We had this fine with ds1. Took 510 minutes and I held and positioned the baby during the test. He never cried.

  • LO #2 was born breech, so we had one for her at 1 month adjusted.  It was 15 minutesish and very simple.  She didn't mind it at all.

  • DD1 was breech so we were referred for an u/s.  Pedi said he thought her hips felt fine, but we still went and I'm glad we did.  She had a mild subluxation and recommended we double diaper her for a few months.  Things got better at the follow up appts (I think they were 4m, 6m, and 1 yr), and once they're a little bit older they do an xray instead of an u/s.

At DD's 1 year appt with the ortho, he said her hips looked so good he didn't need to see her at 2 years unless my gut told me something was wrong.

The u/s itself didn't take very long at all.  They undid her diaper, put the goo on, and then moved the wand around and took some pics. GL!
