Those that make their own baby food

Are you just steaming/baking with your regular cooking tools or do you have a baby food maker?  I have a food processor, so I am totally equipped to make my own, but I'm wondering if a baby food maker would make it easier to just make a little at a time. I will fully admit, organization is not my strong point.  I don't really see myself making big batches, labeling and freezing them ahead of time. Plus our freezer is teeny!  Thoughts?

Re: Those that make their own baby food

  • I have a baby food maker, but it is basically the same as a blender, except you twist on the top, and flip it over to put it on the machine to turn on.

I would just be using a regular blender for it, but my mom bought it for me (super cheap from babies r us when she was a manager there) so I am using it...

I don't make big batches at a time... maybe a weeks worth (well, that was when he only ate it once a day) which was 1-2 ice cube trays, then once it was frozen, I put the cubes into a ziploc baggie.

This week we started 2 meals a day, but it is mashed avocado, so I am making it one day at a time.

  • I make about 10-14 days worth of puree at a time (really about a weeks worth if DD was eating only purees). I just use my magic bullet which works just fine. I steam or boil the harder things first then blend them. My bullet has almost kicked the bucket and I plan to just replace it with another blender, not a special baby food maker or baby bullet or something. I want something more practical since she won't be on purees for long and a blender works fine. I just bought some mini storage containers from BabiesRUs to freeze it in small amounts.

  • I'm using regular cooking tools and then using an immersion blender that we already had. It works well for small batches and is very easy to clean.

  • I use my Cuisinart food processor (highly recommend this for everything!), and my blender. I bake or steam and then freeze in ice cube trays and put into ziplocs. I haven't made any big batches yet, since he JUST started opening his mouth for solids last week!

  • I use my food processor. As I'm cooking our regular meals I'll take things from that to use for DS. I like him to have variety so this is the easiest way for me to do it. I have tons of tubes I got from the hospital for storing BM. I don't BF this time so I use them to freeze food. Now DS likes food better when it is a little more chunky so depending on what it is I don't even need to use my food processor. Today a lunch he had avocados and peas from my lunch. I just mashed them with a fork.

  • I haven't used anything special at all. I've roasted sweet potatoes, apples, and I'm doing carrots next and just mash them with a fork. For bananas, and avocados I just smushed with my fingers. Pears and cucumbers I have raw just diced into little pieces, he's also has oatmeal adult kind that I made extra done. I'm not making everything since he loves the organic pouches and they are handy.

  • I have a baby bullet, but I have used my regular food processor too. Either work just fine!

  • I make big batches at a time using a pot, steamed basket, and immersion blender.  I was using a food processor to puree but now that P is eating chunkier purees, I find the immersion blender lets me have more control over the consistency.

I wrote a detailed post on how I cook and store if you're interested:
