To the point I don't know any more

This damn dog is about to drive me up the wall the youngest is having "issues" adjusting to pregnant me it's to the point she barks and growls at my belly she has decided to start jumping at my belly or pounce at it or heaven forbid I take her out to go potty she will look back at me then try to yank me off balance. It's to the point Idk what to do with her and now my DH wants to get rid of her.  What do I do we have been through training twice.

  • Hmm

I've heard of dogs being able to sense pregnancy, but that is just crazy.

  • No advise other than the training. My dogs didn't react badly to me being pregnant. I would recommend letting her smell a blanket or something that's been on you LO before you introduce them.

  • This is hard for me to comment on. I was raised that you do not get rid of pets. If you got a pet you keep it for the long haul, it's not an option. I know not everyone thinks this way though. So I guess you are your hubby need to make the best choice for you. We would choose training and would not get rid of the dog though.

  • Keep a few squirt bottles handy - she'll start associating the aggressive behavior towards you/your belly with getting an unpleasant soaking. It's how I trained my cats to stop sharpening their claws on the sofa, who knows it might work with dogs too ;p

I agree with shea.  I would try alot of things before I gave up on my dog.  You still have months to go before you need to worry about the dog around the baby, and if the dog pulls when you walk him then leave that for DH if possible.

  • There are many different types of training, what kinds have you tried?  What breed is your dog?  How much activity does s/he get? Some dogs respond better to some programs than others.  Also, I don't know where you live but some animal hospitals (specialty/emergency not necessarily general practice) have behaviorists (kind of like a psychiatrist for people).  Although it sounds silly they can be very helpful.  You can call your vet to find out more information and they may have some recommendations.  Its important to remember that a tired dog is a good dog so walking often is important.  As PP have mentioned the squirt bottle is also a good idea.  Another option if everything else fails in a collar that can help reinforce behaviors.  I hope you don't give up on your pup just yet.

  • I agree with all pp. You can try a clicker in two different ways.. One being everything the dog does a bad behavior click it. Second if they like the clicker every time the dog interact with you in a good way click it and give a treat. Water bottles work great on my cats. I have them all around my house. I even got my stubborn cat that hates all new animals to like both are dog and kitten.

  • hmmm... very strange... never hear of this... especially so early in pregnancy. Have you changed how you treat her at all? e.g. less play time, snuggle time? Like children.... negative attention is still attention. Maybe she isn't getting as much attention and you're more protective of your tummy so she may notice that and be resentful. I really don't know... just making some crazy guesses here. Try to get on to an animal behaviourist.

  • I agree with all the suggestions by previous folks and that you shouldn't give up on your dog.

How are you behaving when your dog acts this way?  Your dog may be responding to a shift within you that she isn't used to, or as Ceasar may say, your "energy."  When she jumps, do you get angry or yell or fearful?  I have seen my dog jump all over on my friends when they come in the house nervous and afraid, so I truly believe they can read your emotions.  And when we are pregnant, our emotions are all out of wack.

I think if she tries to jump on you, push her back, take a deep breath, be calm and firm and establish that you aren't going to put up with her invading your space.

What belly? lol. You're only 11 weeks.

Honestly, I don't believe in getting rid of pets just because they're frustrating you.

Definitely these.  Also - if you're having troubles with her pulling while walking, try a harness or a halti, the halti especially.  The halti works wonders for our dog when we take her out in large crowds (where she gets most likely to pull) - it pulls their snouts to the side instead of transmitting the force of pulling to you.

With the jumping - I'd start putting a knee up every time your dog does that.  It's the approach we took with our dogs, and they don't jump up, because they know they'll be kneed in the chest if they do.

  • DONT GET RID OF THE DOG! You cannot get rid of your Kid when they irritate you so why think about doing that with your fur baby???

That aside I know that they can be a pain but I agree with All of the PP recommendations. You are early on in your pregnancy there is still plenty of time to turn things around.

  • You got some good advice the only thing I wanted to add is I've always been told that if a dog tries to jump on you to spin around and put your back to them. This will make them realize that the jumping isn't gettin them the attention they want, and protects your belly.

This is great advice because it does work to protect ur belly....but if you have a dog like mine... she'll bite ur butt. Hahaha but seriously you took on the dog you shouldnt just give up and give it away... she cant hurt you if you don't allow it! Be firm and consistent

I'm sorry but I find this completely and utterly disturbing, I am also a die hard animal lover and against abandonment, abuse, neglect etc.

I can see the joke in it, but it still upsets me.

This is very strange behavior for a dog, especially at this stage in your pregnancy. Has there been any other changes aside from the pregnancy? Have there been any big changes (loss of another pet, family member, remodeling, moving, etc.), you been gone more, less interested in her, crueler toward her (not necessarily abusive but just yelling or snapping more than you normally do)... all of those things would trigger bad behavior... I am sure there is more to it then your baby bump.

My best friend's aunt had her dogs put down because she "couldn't handle them" with her toddler... sweetest dogs in the world, one was a basset and one was a pit mix... she was able to put the basset down because she was very old and had ailing health and with the pit mix (simply because of the breed) all she had to say was that he was being aggressive toward her (which he wasn't EVER aggressive toward anyone!!)... then she also went on to tell her family that after the basset's passing would have been too much for the pit mix to handle, so she thought it was best for him. I never use the C word to refer to a women but she deserved it. The vet should have his license revoked.

    Yes

People that pass off their animals disgust me. (Although I do understand certain circumstances where there is no other option, and in that case you find your animal a loving and good home... you don't just drop them at a shelter or let them loose.)

Your friend's aunt is terrible!  My SIL works in a vet clinic and she sees owners bringing pets in to be put down all the time for pathetic reasons.  She's actually convinced a few to just let her take them.  Her and my brother now have 6 cats, 3 dogs and a rabbit that otherwise wouldn't be loved.  There may be alot of them, but those pets have a great life.  They are TTC now, and had alot of discussions before making that decision about how things would work with the pets.  Don't get a pet if you aren't planning to stick with them through "thick and thin" I think.

I have 4 cats and a dog.  2 of the cats were rescues that had gone from home to home.  This is now their final home and if a problem arises with one of my babies, I always fight to find a solution.

Relieved to see so many others feel the same way :-)
