Pregnant after 35

1st u/s today

Sorry I haven't been posting much, I've had the flu and taking care of a toddler that has the flu...no fun. Apparently there is a strain going around that didn't make it into the flu shot this year...we'd all been vaccinated. We're all feeling much better now.

As far as the LO goes, everything is measuring exactly where it should...due date is still July 28th, and I saw the heartbeat :)

I'm starting to feel a bit more confident that this is it for us.  Now we're trying to decide whether to do the NT scan or go straight to the MaterniT21 blood test.  After talking with my husband I'm going to give my clinic a call back and try to find out how much the MaterniT21 test would be out of pocket for us before we decide.  Back to the doctor in 4 weeks.

Re: 1st u/s today

  • I'm glad you and your toddler are feeling better.  It sucks that flu shot can't prevent all of the strains.

I'm due May 25, and it seems like I'm at the doctor's a lot, even though everything is well.

  • I'm glad you're feeling better. Now that you're pregnant, your immune system stinks (to avoid rejecting the baby), so maybe it's time to carry some hand sanitizer around with you? I

am so psyched that your U/S went well-- what a relief! And it starts to feel like you'll get your take-home baby, which is a fantastic feeling!

I would definitely recommend the MaterniT21 test-- you can't beat 99% accuracy for DS! My lab offered me a deal-- they're trying to get insurance companies to recognize the value of the test, so when my insurance company denies it (which they will), then they'll bill me only for $235 of the test. Wahoo! Totally affordable. Especially since my insurance doesn't cover any of the other tests, either, including the sequential and the NT scan (which would cost me $800 minimum OOP). So maybe when you call the lab that does the test, you can ask them if they have any special programs like that?

  • Wow that sucks getting the flu even after you got the shot.  I'm glad you are feeling better and had a great u/s, congrats!

I went with the nt first because it was no money out of pocket.  I believe the company that does maternit21 limits your cost to $235 if you have any kind of insurance coverage for it.

  • Congrats on the great U/S!!  It's so nice to see the HB and hear that you are on track!

Sorry to hear about you and your toddler being sick!  I heard about the flu strain that doesn't respond to the vaccination and it's supposed to be pretty nasty.  Glad you guys are feeling better!

  • Flu strain not in shot = boo!! But feeling better = yay!

I got both the NT and the MT21, but my insurance covered the NT so I didn't have to pay out of pocket for it. With the MT21, I was offered the same deal Michelle was--no more than $235 out of pocket for me regardless of what my insurance does (they will deny it, I have no doubt).

That's kind of how I feel.  And Daniele...that irks me your insurance doesn't cover those other screening tests.  I'm glad you had the MaterniT21 option.

So I called my OB's office back and they do the Harmony test, not MaterniT21 (same test, just a different company).  I called the lab and got the billing codes then called my insurance and it turns out I have 100% coverage as long as I stay in-network (w/o insurance it it would be $795).   However, Harmony doesn't bundle in the sex determination, that's an extra $150 (def not covered) if we want it.  My NT scan would be completely covered as well.  So now we have all the info, we just need to decide.
