Is this normal at a salon?

I went in for a cut and highlights. The stylist had me help by folding and handing her the foil. Then she put me under the dryer. While I was there, she had another appointment for a haircut (she didn't tell me, I saw her take a guy to her chair). After a while she came back to me and turned off the dryer. She told me to sit there "and cool off." Ok. After 20 minutes of cooling off, I was freakin bored. No managzine. Nothing.

Meanwhile, she is done with the guy's cut and they are just chatting and hanging out. WTF. Make me more mad because the guy lives in the builing next to me and is a douche bag (parks in handicapped spaces. I call the cops on him for fun.). So I get up and start to walk to her. She IGNORED me.

Finally the guy left and she told me to go sit at the first sink. When she came back, she said "I didn't forget about you."

At the end, she told me how much. Too bad she didn't tell me cash or check when I made the appointment. She makes her own appointments.

After being there and hour and a half, she wanted to put me under the dryer to dry some more. I told her I have been here long enough and need to go.

Is it normal to have a stylist take another customer and make you wait so long?

    I have had stylists do another hair cut while I'm under the dryer, but it's never taken that long.  I've also NEVER "helped" by folding foils etc.  That's her job, and you're there to kind of be pampered. I'd be pretty ticked.

    My stylist, who is a family friend, always works on at least one other customer while my color is on.  He and the other staff always make sure that I have magazines and a drink if I want one. They also check one me several times while I am waiting.  To get my hair colored and cut it usually takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

    My stylist will take other clients while I am drying or while my dye is setting...what else is she supposed to do? She can make some extra money rather than just sit around and wait. But, for her to socialize is messed up, IMO.

    I have also seen some stylists ask their clients to hold their foil. Not the ideal situation, so I would be pretty annoyed.

    Take a quick haircut client while you're processing... yes. Making you wait while she chats... heck no. For a hilite, cut and style, you should be there for an hour and a half total, in and out. And I have been to salons where they make you "help" with hilites in the past, but I don't think it's the norm nowadays. I wouldn't go back to her if I were you.

    My hairdresser would if it was a fast one because it can take a long time for the color to set. She would never take another woman or a cut and dry on. Guys are usually fast. It depends if your color had actually set in, but it does seems weird that you waiting a really long time.

    Yes, it is very normal to take another client in between a color/foil service. Sometime foils do need to cool a bit before rinsing, or perhaps they weren't done lifting yet. I do know some stylists who have their client "help" hold foils, but I personally don't like that and teach my students not to do that.?

    I don't think there's a way for me to say this without sounding like abitch or snobby, but in my  own personal experience, you get what you pay for when it comes to salons. If it was a more affordable place, I've had very similar experiences as you did. But when I go somewhere that costs me a bit more, somewhere that I'm paying for the entire experience and not just "the hair cut/colour" - I expect WAY more out of the stylists in terms of cust. service. 

    My current stylist takes other clients while I'm under the dryer, I don't mind. But they don't forget about me or pretend I don't exist either. There are three 'shampoo girls' that are constantly around to make sure the ladies under the dryers are okay, ask if we want a water or coffee, bring us magazines, whatever. 

    I'd be really peeved if I got the treatment you got and it was at a half-decent salon.

    The one time I had color done, my stylist did take another client while I sat under the dryer, but she got right back to me after that--and checked on my mutliple times during my sitting. I love my stylist :) Never helped fold the foils...

    This was a nice salon, not a cheap place. Not going back.

    My stylist will do another person's hair while I'm under the dryer between my color and cut, but she asked me if it was OK with me first before she started booking appts during that time. ?She also makes sure I have a drink and magazine and doesn't make long appts during that time. ?I would be mad if I had to hold the foils too; she should have her setup arranged so you don't have to do anything but sit there.
