Re: abnormal fetal heart rate?

  • Yes and no (not the heart specifically just the beating), she is concerned but also stated the reason she is sending the referral to the specialist is b/c they dont usually see teeny babies at 6 weeks. so I am hoping the MFM has a great reason for the erratic beats.

  • Maybe it wasn't just wasn't a good connection-- you know, the baby was moving or the wand wasn't able to go through all the fluid in your uterus? Or did the tech watch the heart rate actually go down and stop?

  • I'm not sure. the tech didnt explain it the Dr did, so she just said it stopped. the tech did ask me to be very still while she measured the heart rate. really hoping the MFM tells me this is no big deal. but I am so happy to be pregnant! this is the longest I've ever been pregnant.

  • 170 doesn't seem all that high for almost 7 weeks along--I had my first u/s at 8w5d and our baby's HR was faster than that (174 or 175, I think). As for the dropping to zero, it might have just been a technical problem with the wand or system, not the baby. And as you say, the office is not used to measuring that early, so the tech may not be that skilled at it.

EDIT: And STAY AWAY from Dr. Google!! It can only lead to tears. I am sure your MFM's office can do a better job with an early ultrasound.

  • Yeah, it could have just been the technique and how the wand was positioned.  I had an ultrasound today and when the RE took the HR it was calculated automatically by the machine in the 160s, but he said he wanted a better idea of the real HR and used the manual modes to put the cursor over the peaks and it was about 140.  Who knows.  Hope the drop off was just a slight change in angle of the ultrasound wand.
