Hi ladies,
2 questions here- is anyone else having gas that is really painful? I had my first incident w/ "trapped gas" last night that actually scared me and thought I was having BH or something b/c it really felt like my whole stomach area cramped up.
2nd- anyone else plan on using short term disability leave after their ML runs out? what kind of conditions do they usually quickly approve it for? I'm a teaching and am really trying to take the rest of the school year off and will be able to if I can get the short term dis. appoved.
Re: Gas and Short term Disability
I had painful gas in my tummy last night after a big dinner of carbs. Probably shouldn't have eaten so much bread
As far as STD goes it's different for everyone. Some people have STD as a benefit at their job, some have private policies, but whether it covers pregnancy, when it does, and how long you have to work there to be eligible for it is all different. If you have separate mat leave and STD policies it's not usual that you would be covered under both, but it's worth looking into.

First question: I had some really bad gas pains on and off a few weeks back. I think it was due to constipation backing me up. I am taking fiber supplements and drinking more water and I've been okay since. But I feel your pain.
Second question: I would ask your HR how STD works there. I'm using short-term disability first -- we don't actually get any paid "maternity leave" at my company, so I use STD, then remaining vacation and then unpaid. I was told that STD ends as soon as my doctor releases me back to work, which is normally 6-8 weeks after delivery, though a total of 13 weeks would be possible. I don't know that you can just use short-term disability for something after that period, unless you can prove a different specific illness or injury.

Question 1: Yes, I had a really bad bout with gas today. You are right in that it can feel almost like BHs. I was very uncomfortable for most of the day. I think it's definitely tied to diet since yesterday was our work teams Christmas lunch and I ate so much.
Question 2: This is definitely job specific. I use STD first since you have to be under doctor's care to use it. At my job I have 6 wks at 100% available and then 20 wks at 75% available if I'm under the care of a doctor. Once released from the doctor I have to use personal time, vacation, or unpaid leave under FMLA to cover any remaining time up to a total of 12 wks.
Question 1 - I had terrible gas pains during the first tri and I've been having stomach pains these last few days and I'm wondering if maybe its not gas. My OB suggested gas-X and it really helped! My stomach would feel like I could pop it with a pin and after a gas-X it was so much better!
Question 2 - Like everyone else said I think short term dis is totally job specific. At my work, short term dis doesn't kick in until the 90 day mark so I would have to go on bedrest or have something else happen to hit that mark. I'm taking 8 weeks of unpaid leave when baby comes.
