Parenting after a Loss

One day..

My little OJo will learn that I am more stubborn than he is!

We are in the "I don't need a nap" phase.. but, I'm winning :)  He has fought me everyday for almost a week now on napping.. he typically was taking 3 naps/day.. 2 short naps (about 30 minutes - 45minutes) and one long (about 2-3 hours).. lately, he fights for every single nap!  I, however, don't give in, and eventually he falls asleep.. I've read that it's important to stick to the schedule even when they're resisting it.. it's tough, especially when he's freaking out, but hoping we'll get through this quick and painlessly!  The most he cries is ~5 minutes, but it's that tired/whiny cry because he's so overtired!

Did you go through this?  If so, how long did it last for?

Re: One day..

  • We're not a fan of the strict schedule around here, it's more of a routine thing for us. We follow DD's cues and put her down when she's tired. Now that she's vocal she asks to go "night night" when she's tired. It's usually around the same time every day, but we try not to work by a clock.

His times are flexible, as you said I go by his cues.. Rubbing eyes, fussy for no reason, etc.. It's just he will fight it like no other.. What I meant by stick to a schedule was more that I'm trying to keep him with 3 naps/day.. I've read they usually don't drop a nap until closer to a year.. Schedules, per se, have worked well for us BC DS was super colicky, so it was hard to read his cries since he cried constantly.. We shall see.. Everyday, even though he fights it, he always ends up going down., his late afternoon nap is the ne he fights the most, but nice he is down he sleeps for 2-3 hours still.. So, he definitely does still need it..

DD is doing this lately, too! She usually gets about 3 or 4 naps a day, anywhere from half an hour to an hour, and I just put her down when she's getting crabby/rubbing her eyes. She's been fussing the minute I lie her in her crib, and then crabs herself to sleep. I just keep going in every few minutes reassuring her until she's asleep, and try not to pick her up unless she really gets nuts.

Yup! Exactly what DS is doing... Fuss, fuss, fuss.. But it's a tired cry!! I try not to pick him up either.. Will just go in, rub his head, shush him, put pacifier in and go back out.. I hope this phase doesn't last!!

  • Emma has been doing this since 4 months (4 month wakeful)?  Sometimes she goes to sleep quickly, but most days it takes alot of soothing, bouncing, ect.  Teething doesn't help.  I just follow her cues and do what works.  We use a white noise machine.  I also sing the same song (You are my Sunshine) over and over again specifically when she's overtired.  It usually doesn't take long for her to relax that way.  She may not fall asleep right away, but atleast she's not freakin out.  I've found I have to get her attention focused on one thing - a bright light, the tv (not watching it, just the lights and motion), currently the Christmas tree, lol.  Otherwise, there's too much going on and she does not want to miss any of it!

Owen is the same way!! He loves looking around and can't pull himself away sometimes.. We also found the Xmas tree to work wonders!! Ha, I will totally be that person who keeps her tree up until the summer if I can manage to keep it alive lol! Owen sat for over an hour and a half just watching us decorate it last night.. Then, stared at it for an hour earlier while I was cleaning!!
