Re: 3DT vs. 5DT
i asked this question at my IVF orientation class, b/c i thought that the 5 day was better, but my doctors explained it as.....if by day 3 there is a stand out stellar egg, they will transfer it, but if they all seem to be moving along at the same pace, they will wait until day 5 to see who stands out then. They compared it to running a race, everyone starts out at the same place, but as time goes bye, there is going to be people that stand out over the others. HTH!

I've never heard that explanation, and while it is a valid one, the more common explanation tends to be related to the number and quality of embryos at day 2 or 3. I would say if you only have, say 4 or less good ones, you'll probably get recommended for 3 days, because it's possible some or all might not progress enough to make it to 5 days. If you have a lot more, then they can wait until 5 days to see which ones are looking the best.
In my case, I had 10 and 16 fertilize respectively during my IVFs. By day 3, I had 5 and 8 good ones left, so i made it to 5dt both times. I know one of my fellow 2IFers, who just had her ET on Monday, had a 3dt because she had 4 embies left.
You can always push for a 5dt if you want to know how they will turn out, but if you have few to work with, the overriding consensus is that the embies will have a better chance to progress inside of you, and might make it, whereas they might arrest in the culture if left until 5 days.

They make that call at day 5 or 6. After day 6, the embies can't survive outside the body. I had my 5dt yesterday, so I'm waiting to hear if any made it to freeze. The RE thought one should, and 1-2 more might, but since I didn't get any last time, I'm not counting on anything.

::TICKER WARNING::
My clinic only did 6dts. My RE's reasoning was that the sperm doesn't really start "doing it's thing" until around day 4/5, so pushing off to day 6 you get a much clearer picture of how things are looking. Of course, he said it much better.
We had 8 eggs fertilize, on ET day when we got there we had 5 that looked really good or better. We put 2 in and froze 3.
I like this page for reference https://www.advancedfertility.com/blastocy.htm
With our last IVF, we retrieved 8, 5 of which were able to fertilize normally. They brought us in for a 3dt & we transferred the best 2. They watched the remaining 3 until day 6 & were unable to freeze them due to the poor quality.

I got called yesterday which is day 5 that 3 of 7 made criteria to be frozen (blastocysts As or Bs) and that they will watch the other 4 one more day but they likely won't make it. Received the call today that 3 more were frozen (2 are approaching hatching and 1 blastocyst)!!! I had prepared myself for none but this was such great news so now we have 6 on ice
