First word?

So baby has been saying MaMa and Mum. I think that his is his first word and want to write it in his baby book. However my husband and mom don't think it counts just yet. They think that he is just babbling and has found that sound gets a happy reaction from me.

So what do you think? First word? still babbling?

Re: First word?

  • I kid you not - I was JUST about to post the very same question!! DD says "Dada" all the time, in reference to her dad but also about everything else. When I say "Where's Dada?" she definitely knows what I mean and looks around for him, but I'm just not convinced that "Dada" counts as a first word yet. Also, she tries to say "cat" but just says the T at the end of the word, so it just sounds like, "tttttttt", but I know what she means. Does that count?

  • I say that counts. I counted mama as E's first word. Dada wasn't too long after. If those don't count then I don't have a clue what her first word was. And at 2 she still has words that only I can understand.

That totally counts! They're just jealous that mama was his first word. ;)

FWIW, both my kids' first word was mama. Mostly because I spend a ridiculous amount of time telling them "Say mama. Ma. Ma. Can you say mama?" Yep. I was THAT mom....

I'm that mom too. ha.... so no one was surprised that he is repeating it.

Plus my husband is coming around to liking that he says it.  ie: dirty diaper - Do you want dada to do it or mama? "MaMa"
