Baby hair falling out, shaving etc.

I know a lot of cultures shave the baby's head shortly after birth and it's supposed to grow back thicker and stronger so they say. We did not shave Olivia's head but she did lose a ton of hair around the one month mark which I think is typical. She was almost bald with the lil baby mullet in the back.

My friend's niece was born almost a month ago and they shaved's the baby's head last night. She had a good amount of hair so so sad to see it go! What I want to know is, would this then prevent the typical hair falling out that babies go through? In my head I'm thinking this baby is going to be bald for a super long time now if any hair she grows now is just going to fall out. Am I thinking of this wrong?

Also, who here shaved baby's head and what does the hair situation look like now?

  • I did not shave Ian's head...and I've never heard of doing this!  Odd!  I don't know that it would actually affect how their hair may fall out or how it grows back.  What it may prevent is that "awkward" time if the baby's hair does fall out...like what you described as the baby mullet.

  • Is this maybe something different cultures or religions do? I don't know of anyone doing this. All I have heard about baby hair is it is bad luck to cut it before age one.

I've heard of it in Hispanic, African and Asian cultures.

When I worked at a day care, one of my little girl's had her head shaved. She was Indian I believe, but don't quote me. She was older than our babies are, though. She was 3 and she had the longest, most gorgeous hair and I was sad to see it go! I also felt bad for her because she was self conscious afterward and the other kids kept asking why she had no hair. I have heard of people doing this in a few different cultures, but I am not sure at what age they do it. I always thought it was a little bit older, like this girl was.
