Did you have a LO that was breech and then turned before birth?

Mobile Users: Did you have a LO that was breech and then turned before birth?

Kimbus, EatmoreCupcakes...?

Since I am currently obsessed and freaking out about having a breech baby and a CS, please tell me about your experiences.

When your LO's  turned did you feel them flip, did you notice movement differently or did you figure out they had turned at an OB appointment?

Did anyone do anything "naturally" to try and get their babies to turn? Any success?

Did anyone have an external version? Please tell me about the experience and outcome.

Re: Did you have a LO that was breech and then turned before birth?

  • My DS turned breech from a head down position at 36 weeks, so he was going the wrong way. I tried accupuncture, chiropractor, laying upside down on the ironing board, handstands in the pool, the hot pack/ice pack on the belly, and the flash  light. All with no luck. MOST, stastically between 97-99%, babies will flip to head down before the due date. 1 hour before the c-section, they did a quick ultrasound to make sure he was still breech, because they would have called it off if he flipped. I knew he had not flipped back. You could see his head poking out of the top left side of my belly.

I had an anterior placenta so was not a candidate for an external version.

The day he flipped, I felt a lot of pressure down under like he was dropping, and I thought things were going to get started soon. The he flipped! It was the craziest feeling- it woke me up out of a dead sleep! My belly completely changed shape and it felt like an alien was wrestling inside me. I am a huge proponent of vaginal birth, and think doctors are too knife happy when it comes to birth, but I feel like maybe he changed positions because my pelvis was not big enough for him, and he couldn't have been born any other way. DS was born weighing 10lbs and off the charts for head circumference and weight, so I feel this was exactly how he was supposed to be born, and have no regrets or bad feelings about my c-section.

Thank you for the information. I know what will be, will be and IF we have a CS I will come to terms with it.

I did not know the above information. I also have an anterior placenta so an external version may not be an option for me.

  • Definitely excludes you then. The worry is that the placenta will detach during the manipulation and that is a serious emergency for both you and baby.

  • Makes COMPLETE sense.

  • I'm odd man out here. DS was in the same position for the longest time and both of our doctors and my chiropractor thought he was head down. Wrong. They actually didn't find out until I was in labor and he was halfway out. Ironically enough he was early and had we made it to our next appt we would have discovered he was breech. The hospital we delivered at just happened to have a doctor who would deliver vaginally and he just so happened to be our doctor. Talk about right time, right place.

I have been nervous this time around since they are going to be on it as far as positioning goes. So far the only recommendations I have gotten have been the chiro or an external version. Also look up spinning babies online. As of now, this baby is head down so I'm keeping all body parts crossed that it stays that way. If not, we are still going to push for a vaginal delivery. GL!

Really!? So you delivered Max vaginally breech?

When this baby turned did you feel it or know it?

  • I did and unfortunately she didn't turn.  Hannah was breech most of my pregnancy and from 32 weeks on.  I tried EVERYTHING including yoga, spinningbabies, chiro(webster method), inversions (on my own), and was going to try acupuncture when I went into labor 10 days early.  She was still breech once we got to the hospital, so I had a cs.

As far as the version goes I would talk with your doctor because STM are better candidates.  With that said, I don't think I would attempt it this time either.  With Hannah I wasn't a good candidate because it was my first, I had low fluid, and Hannah was tiny.  They said normally the chances are 50%, but I was down to below 30%.  Both my aunt and MIL are L&D nurses and they have witnesses versions go wrong and an emergency section necessary from it.  One patient my MIL had even ended up losing the baby afterwards (not to scare you) and some others actually turned back afterwards.  Between that and my OB telling me that they would give me an epidural in case I needed to deliver from the procedure and due to pain, I decided against it.

    Good luck to you.

  • Well, I had an elective c/s so my opinion doesn't "count" but he was breech right up until a week prior to delivery. I felt him moving in the middle of the night, turned on the light, and was amazed/horrified to watch him turn. It kinda hurt but not so bad that I felt I needed medical care. It was the most fascinating thing I have ever seen. Since I was having a c/s I can't take any credit for trying to move him on my own. Sorry, that didn't help, I know. I guess I just wanted to give you hope that they CAN move very late in the game on their own.

  • DS was breech for a long time - transverse, though. He turned head down really late, but he never got into the right position, and was sunny side up...with his hand up on his head. I never fully dilated, and he never fully descended, so I had a c-section. I prefer to believe he has been stubborn since he was conceived and just didn't want to come out - that's totally his personality now, anyway. Wink

I tried a few things from the spinning babies website, but I don't think I tried very hard. I don't know what finally got him to move head down. I was of a very naive "It's all going to work out in the end" mindset when I was pregnant with DS.

Yea, I wanted an unmedicated birth so I always joked that I'd go in with jazz hands and pushing to avoid any interventions. I never thought that's what would actually happen, but it pretty much did.

As far as this baby, I didn't actually feel it turn, but I have felt constant movements that I didn't feel with Max.
