Poll: DH's holiday time off

How much time will your DH get off for the holidays?  Is he taking any additional time off?

When I worked, I always only got Christmas Day and New Years Day off.  Or if they fell on the weekend, I got Friday or Monday off.  DH always seems to get lucky and gets the Eves and day-afters off too.  But this year, (he's at a new company) his last day of work is the 20th and he goes back on January 2nd.  I'm so happy that I'lll be home all of those days too!

Re: Poll: DH's holiday time off

  • Dh gets Christmas day and New Years day off.  He's taking the week of Christmas off because we have family coming to visit.

  • The university he works for is on break from Dec 20-Jan2, but he's not sure yet if he'll officially take all those days off. If he does work it will be from home and just getting runs started (he does computer simulations of chemical processes) so he has data to work with when he returns.

  • DH is in insurance sales- commission based... so he will only be taking off Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... New Years Eve and New Years Day.

  • He gets Christmas Day and Boxing Day off automatically, but he's taking the whole week off.

  • My husband gets Christmas Day and New Years off.  He usually takes 2 weeks off during the holidays because he gets 5 weeks off during the year but never gets close to using it.  It's the only time of year it's slow enough for him that he can take a chunk of time off.

  • He gets Xmas Eve and Xmas day off, and the same for NYE and NYD. He works for a company with insanely good benefits and days off, though. He generally takes the whole week of Xmas off, too. It's nice having a mini-family vacation for the winter!

  • My husband works 7 days a week-he'll get Christmas day off and thats it-and working a 17 hr shift on Christmas Eve so I'll be lucky if he doesn't sleep Christmas day away....So the day after Christmas I'm leaving to spend the week and new year's with my dad because I don't want to be alone

  • He gets 2 weeks off, paid, every year from just before Christmas to after the New Year. He works at a non-profit.

    Yeah, he's super spoiled.

  • My FI works in the auto industry and has the whole week of Christmas off and goes back the 2nd. They have voluntary work day on the 28th though. He will also probably end up working a few more days too, it will be nice to have him home for more than a few hours each day though.

  • My DH only gets his normal days off, and Christmas Day. He has to work Christmas Eve until 5pm ish. This year, it's going to really be hard for us, because the guy right underneath him just found out he has cancer, and is going in for surgery in the next few days. So my DH probably won't even take his normal days off, he'll have to work straight through the whole month.

  • H gets Christmas Day and New Year's Day off. He will taking vacation time for Christmas Eve because we have Christmas with my family on the 24th.

  • The union contract closes the plant Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day ... unless they fall on a weekend, then I think they get Fri-Mon off two weeks in a row.

This year, DH is contemplating taking the rest of his vacation for the year so he gets the 22nd-1st off.  I doubt he will do it (he is a work-a-holic, so I never expect him to actually follow through with his plans to take days off).

  • DH gets Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day off, but will be taking the full week in between the holidays off as well.  He does this every year.  He may also take off Jan 2nd (his birthday), but it depends on what happens with his project at work while he is off.  He does have the flexibility to work from home (aka he will log in to the network pretty much every day anyways), so he might take that extra day.

  • He only gets Christmas day off and New Years day off, but he has a lot of vacation time to burn before he loses it, so I think he may take off the week before Christmas.

  • Where my H works if the holiday (any holiday) doesn't fall on his scheduled day off he has to work. Last year he got Christmas off. This year he is taking off 3-4 weeks when the baby is born so he will be off for Christmas and NY. He has never been able to take that much time off for the kids' birth before so it'll be nice. And he will be home during break for the older two.
  • He is taking off from Dec. 17 until after the new year. His company is generous with vacation time.

  • He just gets the day.  He could probably take more time off, but he works in a hospital so you don't always get approved.

  • DH works shift work and works 4 on, 4 off.  Holidays only mean triple time in pay.  He works Christmas Eve & Christmas this year as well as New Year Eve/New Years Day.
  • Time off for the holidays? What's that?

DH actually has Christmas off this year so I'm a happy camper! First time in.....almost 6 years.

  • This year he will get Christmas eve and Christmas off and then 8 hour days the rest of the week, instead of 10.5. And then new years eve and day off and 8 hour days the rest of the week again.
  • With DH working for a new company this Christmas he will only get Christmas Day and New Years Day off. I'm really sad about this since he usually gets a few more days other than those two. Stupid company policies state that you can not have the two weeks before or after Christmas off.

  • DH get the Christmas Eve and day and New Years Day off. I think he's taking off the whole week of Christmas though so I'm excited. The guy never takes vacation or sick days, so this will be so great.

  • Dh works the 24th for a few hours, then is off for a few days. He has January 6 - February 7th off. They made him take it off because even after that he has 10 weeks of vacation time left. He gets 5 weeks a year but only ever takes a week. I think he maoves to 6 weeks a year next year too.

  • DH's office closes and basically gives them a "winter break" for a week during the Christmas/New Year's week. He will likely be taking his paternity leave right before or right after this since LO is due 1/1, so he'll probably be home for 3 weeks.  Unfortunately if one week of his paternity leave falls during the week they have off already, he just gets 2.

  • DH gets whatever time off he wants, BUT he's always got his phone and computer with him. We'll be in NYC from the 21st-27th. I'm sure he'll take phone calls while we're there except on Christmas Day.
  • DH works for the DOD and they take the whole week of Christmas off and then he will also get New Years day off.

Then baby girl should be coming so he is taking another 2 weeks off.

  • Christmas day and New Years day

He just started a new job this week, so he has no PTO and doesn't start accruing until Jan. However, his job is letting him take Christmas Eve day off if he works up the time the week before.

He took the whole week off before Thanksgiving as he knew he wouldn't have much for PTO at his new job. So that was our last hurrah of a week off for awhile! :)

  • He only gets Christmas and New Year's days as holidays.  He did get Thanksgiving and the day after though.

He's taking off a half day mid-week next week and then the Thursday and Friday leading up to Christmas as well as Christmas Eve as paid vacation time.

Kind of a bummer though because in June he switched from a job where he had 4 weeks PTO to 10 days (which he only got 5 of because he started mid-year).  So... I'm used to him taking off quite a bit of time around the holidays to burn through vacation (not 4 weeks, but usually like 2 weeks).  I'm going to miss it!

  • DH hasn't gone back to work since he's gotten home from the deployment, so we don't know his exact days off yet, but I would make a guess that he will be working Christmas and New Year's.  He'll be home by 4:30 though.

  • Holy moly my DH needs a new career path - he will work ALL the holidays every year unless it falls on his regularly scheduled days off (weds/thurs).  I'm glad he got thanksgiving off since it was DDs 1st bday, but working 10-8 on Christmas and all other holidays bites :(
