Weird request from my grandma

I mentioned to my grandmother that I need to take R for his first haircut.  She told me she wanted some of the clippings as a keepsake.  I thought that was really odd, and said I'd only planned to keep enough for his baby book.  She said, "You're not giving any to your mom?"

Uh, no.  Really?  I couldn't imagine anyone other than the parents wanting a lock of a kid's har.

Re: Weird request from my grandma

  • That is totally an olds thing. When we helped my husband's mom clean out their house when she was downsizing, there were creepy envelopes filled with hair from ancestors. Shudder.

  • "No, Grandma. I have no hair to spare. I cannot spare a hair."

Please, let me not be dating myself too much here.

  • Grandma is trying to be sweet.  That generation wants to keep everything, unfortunately.  Just let her know there wasn't enough to save but what you put in his book.

  • I guess its a little weird to want hair from a kid that's not your own. I don't know. Then I guess you end up with a collection of hair from all of your kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Yeah, that is a little strange. Also, my aunt made sure I took a napkin from my shower as a keepsake, too. Is that a thing?

My aunt took a few cupcakes from my wedding/baby shower/first birthday part to take home to her fatass of a husband as a keepsake on his stained shirt.

  • I haven't gotten his hair cut yet, so I will give her some if she really wants it, but I guess I'm not that sentimental.  Yes, I want to keep a little bit myself, but it just never occurred to me to give some to my mom or MIL.

I do have keepsake boxes from my bridal shower, wedding, and baby shower, plus I keep all my greeting cards.

  • I agree, sounds like a sentimental granny thing. It didn't even occur to me to keep any clippings for myself, and then MIL asked if we saved any because "some people make them into keepsake paintbrushes." Umm, they DO?

  • After Big A was born, my mother pitched a fit when I would not let her cut a strand of his hair to take home with her. So when he has his first cut while she was here she insisted on getting hair to take home. I have some to her, as it was no problem.

However, she proceeded to tell me that she kept ALL my hair from EVERY hair cut before I was like six. Ummm. And if I wanted it? She was deeply insulted when I said no and to throw it away. My mother is a hoarder. She was also pitching a fit about not getting ALL his hair we cut.

God, I dislike her so much!

  • Huh. I never even thought to keep some of G's hair when we had it cut a few weeks ago. I almost feel a little bad? But then again I don't feel the need to collect old hair... Must be a generational thing.

  • My mom would totally say something like that. I would just pretend I forgot. My mom feels that she should be in 100 percent of Gator's life, events, etc. But there are some things I want to do with SO and I or momentos I want for just us. To me, I don't want to share some moments with others.

This sounds so much like my mother and also my mindset that it is uncanny.

I can't wait!  I'm sorry your mother makes things so difficult for you, but the bright side is that you have some amazing "WTF?!" stories that nobody can really rival.
