whoa, what did you say?!

While chatting about Nora having to watch Elmo dvds sometimes while in the car, my girlfriend stated she put her children forward facing before a year. She said 9 months for her son and 6 months for her daughter. Wha?! I know my daughter is a nightmare RF , but 6 months!!!! She's a nurse, too. In the ICU...

Re: whoa, what did you say?!

  • I was just talking to my sis the other day and she said she switched my nephew to forward facing at 6 months. This however was more than a few years ago so I don't know what recommendations were back then! Honestly maybe I am just lucky but B has never fussed in his car seat so I have no plans to switch him to forward facing so I often fail to see other people's sides when they say their kid was horrible RF so they switched early!

  • That's unbelievable!  The new general recommendations for RF until 2 y actually only came out a few years ago, before then pretty much everyone I know FF their kid by a year.

  • I try to politely get the word out that RF until at least 2 is safest. It is honestly not common knowledge. I know TONS of people who have switched before 1 year. They don't even know that 1 year AND 20lbs is the law. I know I live in the middle of nowhere (kinda close to Missylf) BUT you would think that doc's, nurses, daycare workers, really anyone who works with kids would be making this more common information.

I am also baffled by how many second hand stores sell used car seats around here. Who knows where/what those things have been in and if they're even safe...Why would you ever take that chance?!?

I admit to not knowing past a year if not for TB, but I would never have done it before a year. I do have a very uncooperative RFing baby, and I didn't want to resort to Elmo. I would rather have screen time than an upset baby or risk her life turning her FF too early. It's like we live in the middle of a corn field or something. Wait....

When we went for Lily's 1 year check up, the nurse was telling me how we can turn her around at 1 year and 20lbs (although Ontario law stupidly actually says either of the two, I believe).  I told her that we specially chose a convertible seat that can RF until 40lbs and she looked confused that there was such an option and looked like I was crazy for wanting to do that.

I am actually surprised no one in the upper generations my parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc. who have been in the vehicle with my LO recently have questioned the fact that he is still RF.nbsp; The only carseat question we have gotten is if we need to get LO a different carseat anytime soon we had been using the convertible carseat in one of our vehicles since LO was born, to which I explained that it was a convertible and what that meant person asking doesn't have kids.

No one has ever question it in my family either, although I lied to them all when they said they were getting their own carseats and said ' sure but it has to be RF because it is illegal to FF before 2.' Lol, no one questions me after that!
