Pregnant after 35

scared of amnio

Hi! I am 35 and 12 weeks pregnant. I just had my first appt. last week finally and get an ultrasound this thursday. I am still unsure of amnio?? should I get it or not? I am scared something will go wrong and I will have a miscarriage. What week do they usually perform this? I am full of anxiety about his but want to know for sure that my baby is healthy. My husband thinks that we should do all the other tests and if something looks abnormal or the chances are high for down syndrome ..then we can go the amnio test. I am stressed!

Re: scared of amnio

  • My doctor's office has a new blood test they can do instead of an invasive amnio.  She said it has come out in the last 6 months.  Maybe you can ask your doctor about that?

  • I understand. I had pretty strong feelings about it and didn't want to do it. Thankfully our NT Scan came back w/amazing results. We thought we could breath easy. Well, the doc ended up running a quad scan after that, even though I didn't request it (Lab oversight) instead of just testing for spina bifida(which came back normal) and it came back "abnormal" range for Downs.

We just pushed up our Anatomy Scan to 17w5d- everything looked normal so I didn't feel the need for Amnio. At the most we would've done MaterniT21(non-invasive, just a blood draw), but again, I didn't feel the need(also not sure how much insurance covers since it's so new, it can be expensive). Just had another US at 21w5d and everything looked great, we were satisfied w/that.

Everyone has to do what's right for them- I would just recommend keeping amnio on the back burner as a "maybe" not a "definitely" depending on what results you get from your other testing so it doesn't stress you out so much.

  • We decided to do the amnio since the margin of error is very low and illiminate the % false positive and false negatives. I did the Amnio last week Friday when I was 16w 5d. If you decide to do one, find the most experience staff/dr you have access to.  The procedure itself is very short, it took less than 5 min, from prep to end. The Dr wanted me on bedrest for 24 hours and take it easy for 48 hours. Asked us to call him if I have fever, cramping, spotting or loss of fluids.

  • Well I do agree with your husband but its a decision only you two can make.  After my 3 losses I just couldn't risk it no matter how small the risk.  Just because it is offered at this age doesn't mean you have to get it no matter what the doctors say.  You can't get the amino until around 16 weeks anyway so you could go ahead with the screening tests now and make your decision after that if you are unsure.  Good luck!

  • Just wait for the results to come back from the blood test and the U/S.  Then you can make the decision about the amnio.  No need to stress yourself out about the decision...until it is necessary (if at all) to make that decision.

  • AMA is a relative thing...if I had had a baby at 35 he/she would be in school now...I wish! I got the MaterniT21 test (blood test) and everything came back negative, so I declined the amnio. Our anatomy scan at 20 weeks went great and all his little parts looked terrific.

  • When I had my first, at 36, there was no MaterniT21, and I opted for the amnio over the CVS.  We had only been TTC for a month or so (naturally, not using fertility treatments) and I'd read that the risk of miscarriage from CVS was greater than that with the amnio.  Also, the chance of having a baby with a chromosomal abnormailty was about equal to the chance of miscarriage from amnio. DH and I discussed it, and we decided that while a miscarriage would be devastating, we were not in a position to raise a special needs child, so I got the amnio. And, really, it was not a big deal.  The needle was inserted right around my belly button, so it felt totally weird and a little uncomfortable, but it was over soon enough and I drove myself there and home.

With this one, we were only TTC for 2 months, and witht he good MT21 results and NT scan, I felt comfortable forgoing additional tests.

And regarding AMA, my OB really seems totes oblivious to the fact that I will be 39 when this baby is born.  I've had no additional testing or monitoring other than the MT21.  I kind of feel neglected, like I should be treated with kid gloves or something.  Or at least be advised that I should not take out the trash or rake the leaves in the yard b/c I am too old and pregnant. J/K!

     Good luck in your decision!

  • I know how you feel.  I don't know if I would get one or not.  I guess the deciding factor might be if the results of the amnio would change the course of my pregnancy.  If it would, then I would definitely consider it.  But there is some risk involved, and that clearly concerns me.  I'm seeing a peri anyway since I'm older, but so far no one has suggested an amnio to me, but I'm just 15 1/2 weeks.  Good luck!
