Parenting after a Loss

When did you stop swaddling?

We swaddle DS every night when we put him in his crib and he sleeps from about 10pm until 6 or 7 am.  The few times we didn't swaddle him he did not STTN because he's a very wild sleeper and moves around a ton and wakes himself up.  He will be 3 months old on Wednesday and is already 14+lbs.  I use the Summer Infant Swaddle Me Swaddles and he's already in the size large and regular blankets swaddled he breaks out of.  When did you or will you stop swaddling?  With his size I'm just not really sure how much longer it will be an option!

Re: When did you stop swaddling?

  • Have you seen the halo sleep sacks with the swaddling feature? That might be a nice transitional option.

  • With DD1, that is about the time we started transitioning her out of being swaddled. She was breaking out every night. We started with her hands sticking out, then would just wrap her lower body. Within a week she was out completely.

  • Around the two month mark. He could bust out and slept better with his hands out. No regrets.

  • We haven't been swaddling for a while. We used blankets and Woombies, which I liked a lot. It always seemed to make G mad, so I didn't bother. She has slept mostly in her swing though, and it's really snug around her. Now that we're transitioning to her cradle [which is flat], it seems she might still benefit from swaddling. I think you should go ahead and swaddle as long as it works for you guys! If it helped G STTN, I'd still do it! We're only getting 4 to 5 hour stretches at night still.

  • DD just turned 4 months, and to be honest I don't see an end to swaddling in our near future....the couple times I've tried to not swaddle her, she has slept horribly...so for now we're going to keep doing it until she starts to roll over and then we'll work on breaking it.

  • We stopped swaddling completely around two months, but we're still swaddling with arms out just fine. I don't think DD would do very well in just a blanket sleeper right now!

  • Once he started rolling over at night - around 5-6m.  We were almost out of the swaddle around 3m, but then he started really needing it again.  He's very long (was 22" at birth) and was always 90% for height and weight then, so we were limited in what we used.  He also hated the Halo ones, so we never used ours.  I think he hated the Halo ones because he liked to flip to his side from birth and they have a flat piece in the back that makes this much harder to do.

We used Aden & Anais blankets exclusively.  Once he got to be too long to keep his feet covered, we started tucking the swaddle up between his legs and under itself to keep him from getting tangled in it.

We also had to wean him from the swaddle.  He PPH LOVED it.  We started with one arm out and then moved to two arms out.  Then we moved to a looser swaddle.  Finally, no swaddle and just a sleep sack.  It took a few weeks, but he did well from the first night in the sleep sack on.  He also started belly sleeping around this time.  He'd flip himself onto his belly the second I put him down in the crib.  If I flipped him back, he'd flip right back over.

See DS is the same way
He was 22in at birth and in the 95th percentile for height. Hes also starting to roll from his back to his side and a few times almost made it to his tummy. I'm afraid he will roll to his belly at night but will be swaddled and unable to flip back. I would do arms out but his arms are mainly what wake him because he swings them around all over and usually wakes up from hitting himself etc.

  • We didn't stop until she was 5m.  We attempted at 4m when she rolled both ways, but it was a huge failure.  I asked my Pedi for advice and she said that since she never attempted to roll over in her crib we could keep swaddling bc it sounded like she wasn't ready to stop.  So we did until she was 5m--when she started breaking out over and over throughout the night.  It was a super tough 2w of her getting used to it.

  • We swaddled (with regular swaddle blankets) until DD was about 3 months old, when she started busting out of them and we were concerned the blanket would get wrapped around her and suffocate her.
