PSA: potty training

I've read quite a few papers of re: potty training too early and how bad it is for a child in the long run. The bladder is a muscle and the more you constrict a muscle, the bigger and tighter it gets. Potty training a kid too early is teaching them to hold it really early on in life so the muscle gets used a lot more than if you hold off and potty train later. As the muscle grows, it actually shrinks the capacity of the bladder In time the change can be huge. Also there are links to increased bladder cancer and incontinence.

Pretty interesting stuff.

What I don't get is...can you really teach a toddler to hold it? Aren't you just teaching them to acknowledge when they get the feeling like they have to go, and teaching where to go?

I don't know, but it seems to me that the muscle control and the ability to recognize the feeling of having to go are developmental steps that can't really be rushed. When that ability develops, isn't that right time to start training, regardless of what age that is?

I have a small box but I pee every 20 minutes. I was potty trained by 18 months too. Maybe the correlation isn't bladder control but vag tightness.

You can't really teach them to hold it. Up until a certain point they aren't even physically capable. Early potty training is more about training parents and toddlers to recognize signs of when they need to go which is why it's pretty common to be day trained but not night trained and why some people use waking up from naps dry as an indicator of readiness.

No , I have a tight one and we both potty trained at 18 months. Jazzy wasn't until 3 and she snisses. I just have a small bladder capacity.

Wow this post was definately fulk of win. On a serious note ds1 was potty trained at 2.5 years old. Did it over night and has yet to wet the bed. He can also hold his peee firever

Similar story but not. I was 25? and had never slept with a guy and decided I had to get see what the fuss was about so one morning after a night that included way too many beers, a friend of mine and I sat in a hawaiian ihop and wrote my prospects on napkins. 3 columns:

1) a friend, a nice guy who knew I dated women and would be sensitive

2) a lesser known guy who might be really good in bed

3) go to another island and sleep with a stranger.

We nixed #3 and went through everyone we know until we had one name left on a pile of napkins. Flash forward a month or so and I am at a pub where the guy who won bartended, he was a friend, and we play pool and (blah blah) we have sex. We became casual sex friends and about 2 moths later, I apparently had too much to drink and said 'isn't it funny you won?!". I thought I had told him the story, but hadn't. He was all hurt and crabby. I thought it was a funny story and was just having casual sex. He thought we were making a love connection. Who knew guys were so sensitive.
