Can your LO use a straw cup?

I'm incredibly frustrated.

DS still uses bottles at home.  He won't drink whenever we try anything else.  He will use a soft-spout sippy at daycare.

He's been on thickened liquids since April.  We met with his feeding therapist again today, and she has a plan to start thinning out his liquids.  However, her plan requires him to use a straw sippy or a regular open cup.  The plan is that we have to get him on straw cups or open cups first, then we can start to thin out the liquids, then we can do a swallow study to make sure he's OK to take regular, un-thickened liquids.

The problem is, he will NOT take a straw.  He absolutely refuses to even let his lips touch it.  He cries and throws the cup. We've tried putting our finger over it to get liquid in the end and then putting it in his mouth, but he clamps his lips shut.  He'll do an open cup, but he throws a tantrum if we try to keep our hands on it because he wants to do it himself.  However, if we let him have it, he'd dump it everywhere.

I wasn't stressed about him still being on bottles, but now that we have to switch him, I'm very stressed.  Tonight he didn't drink anything before bed because I only offered the straw cup, and he wouldn't take it.

Do your LOs drink from a straw?  What did you do to get them to take it?

Re: Can your LO use a straw cup?

  • Yes, he does use one, but I am afraid that I can't be of much help. He learned the straw before any other cup. Maybe just keep him exposed to the cup and let him explore it on his own without pressure. Keep one around at all times with water in it, and just let him pick it up and explore it, almost like a toy. Guide him if he needs help, but don't push it.

  • I have the weirdest kid ever. She won't touch a regular sippy and will only drink from a straw cup.

Always has. She's insane I'm sure.

I have no advice, but good luck. I know it's tough.

  • I am pretty surprised they didn't recommend the honey bear cup. Have you tried that? It seems weird to come up with a plan but not help you get to a place to implement it.

  • Z can drink from a straw cup, but doesn't really like it. Have you tried putting a straw in a regular adult cup? Z loves that. Like a McDonald's straw.

  • Dd actually loves the take N toss straw cups (they definitely are not spill-proof though).

She actually learned to use the straw cup in the bathtub. I gave her a bunch of straws to play with and she would blow bubbles with them, then suck in water and spit it out. After a week or so of this she figure out she can drink with them too (and we moved the straws from the bath to the sippy)

  • DS pretty much only uses straw cups. Once he started using them he didn't want to go back to regular sippys.

  • We tried the straw cup a few months ago, and she didn't take to it very well, so I just put her on a regular sippy and haven't tried the straw again, though I probably should.  That said... DH and I both have Camelbak water bottles that we drink out of, and she would reach for ours, so I got her a small one and she loves it, though she didn't take to regular straw cups.  I got her this one.

I also got her this training cup to help her transition to regular cups.  I still have to watch her when she's using it because she'll dump it over, but it's easier than just giving an open cup.

They gave us something similar... but he won't open his mouth.  He turns his head, cries, and pushes it away.

Maybe we just need to give it more time.

  • I like the suggestion of a regular adult cup and of letting him play with straws in the bath!  I'll give both of those a try.  He LOVES trying to eat/drink whatever I have, so maybe an adult straw will work.
