C-Section

Hello All,

Just went to the doc and learned that baby is breech; C is planned for about a week and a half from now.  I'm fine with that (we discussed other options, and I think C is probably best).  My question for those who have gone before me: Do you recommend asking them to lower the screen so that you can see?  On one hand - miracle of birth!  On the other hand - kind of yucky.

Also, what's the deal with the arm restraints?  Should I ask not to have them?  Any other questions that I should ask the doc when I go back next week?

At least this means that he'll definitely be here by Christmas!  I was getting so worried about that!

Re: C-Section

  • For my c-section, I couldn't have the sheet lowered (and I wouldn't have wanted them to), but my DH could watch whenever he wanted.  He could have videotaped it if he wanted to (he didn't).  I didn't have arm restraints.  I just had a place for my arms, but I was able to move my arms around freely, as long as I didn't go past the sheet.  This was nice, because I had some nerve issues with my right shoulder, so I used my left hand to rub my shoulder during the surgery.

  • I don't think they will lower the sheet as they need to keep the area where they are working sterile. They did show me the baby over the top of the sheet before they wrapped him up and brought him to me.

I don't remember my arms being tied down, but one had an iv in it and the other had a blood pressure cuff on it, so I wasn't moving them much anyway.

  • Don't know how far along you are, but baby can still turn, so don't give up yet!

I have not had a c-section, but I wrote up a birth plan for one just in case.  I asked about having one hand free after the baby was born and they said it wouldn't be a problem.  It really depends on the hospital though, I know the hospital my SIL works at does them pretty much without out exception.  She's only seen a woman be allowed to go without the restraints and that was because she was refusing to consent to the surgery otherwise.

As far as them lowering the screen I don't think I would want that.  But from what I understand, that is for your protection as a sterile barrier.  You could always see if your SO can tape it for you to watch later, or I have heard of some women being able to watch it in the reflection of the lights over the table.

  • We found out our little man is breech as well when we went in for an ultrasound yesterday. We still have time for him to flip around though, so my doctor isn't setting any c section date for us yet. Fingers crossed - but like you, I'm good with whatever is safest for baby and me.

    Good luck with everything!

  • These are all questions you should prob ask your ob, since it usually differs from hospital to hospital. At our hospital, its standard procedure to have your arms restrained and the curtain remain up. Dh was NOT allowed to watch, and in fact they wouldnt even let him in the OR until he left his cell phone and camera in the attached room (im guessing this is bc if something goes wrong, they dont want you to have video footage of their screw up so you can sue them). This will be my 3rd c/s and i just received my pre-op instructions from the hospital that state what is and is not allowed during the c/s. Maybe your dr or hospital has something similar.

  • and i should clarify/add....

DH was allowed to sit in a chair next to my head while baby was born, and then once baby was born, the nurse gave him his cell/camera to take pics with and they led him to the little table where they clean up/do foot prints/weigh/measure.

  • I had a c-section a week ago today. I wasnt able to watch, but after they took the baby and were checking her out, they lowered a screen so I could see what was going on with her. My husband was able to watch the entire c-section if he wanted to. And as far as arm restraints, they didnt restrain my arms, but I did have to lay with them extended out. I was very worried about having a c-section, but it was so very easy and was over before I knew it!
