egg quality improvement recs?

nmartin and please anyone else feel free to weigh in!

I am wondering what I can do to improve my egg quality in advance of IVF in the next 6 months or so. Is anyone up on this stuff? I've been away from the IF community so long I can't remember.

Bonus points if you can tell me how long it takes to kick in. :)

I don't have identified issues, but I'm AMA and worried about it, since we pretty much just get ONE shot at IVF.

Re: egg quality improvement recs?

  • I've heard of some women taking DHEA to help with egg quality.  I also think that metformin and working on improving insulin sensitivity (diet, exercise) can help women with PCOS have better IVF outcomes.  But this is all garnered from the Internet, so I'd probably ask your RE?

Exciting you guys are moving forward for #3!

    This!

I don't know anything about improving egg quality, though.  I am technically AMA (I'm 34, but will be 35 when I deliver) but had no egg quantity or quality issues.  You could be fine, but I get that you want to make the most of your one shot.

Please don't hesitate to ask more IVF questions in the future, though...I (and other I'm sure) will be happy to answer them (as far as we can).

  • I have a few fertility books that I know have info about egg quality, but I can't recall off the top of my head what specifics they say regarding diet, etc. I can look it up and/or send you the titles. (PM me if I forget.)

I've always heard/read 3-4 months. That's what my acupuncturist and ND both follow. There is evidence that acupuncture improves IVF and I personally attribute my physical/mental health to regular acupuncture.

  • No suggestions re: egg quality, but if you do choose to do accupunture, this is the person I went to. She specializes in fertility and super nice.

  • Start taking vitamin D now! A lot. And by a lot I mean 50,000 units a week. At least. That was my RE's recommendation in addition to CoQ 10. He prescribed a prenatal with CoQ 10 for me which I never filled because I decided not to pursue another IVF at the time.

The vitamin d deficiency makes a lot of sense to me. I have an autoimmune disease, which have been shown to be correlated with vitamin d deficiencies. I wish I had known about the connection with egg quality prior to IVF.

  • I forgot to mention that our RE recommended being on the high doses of vitamin D and CoQ 10 for at least 34 months before going through with another IVF!

  • Oh good lord. Not 34 months. 3 to 4 months. Special thanks to the mobile bump site for stealing my punctuation. Insert smiley face emoticon here.

  • Everything I've heard suggests it takes 3 to 4 months for any of this stuff to take effect.  I forgot about the Vitamin D.  If you are deficient, it definitely takes A LOT to bring you up to normal levels, and a huge number of people at northernish latitudes are deficient.
