We spent the past few days at our agencies "homestudy" classes, and getting some clarification on our Family Advocate who went MIA. We had lots of re-assusrance that we "won't slip through the cracks." I'm still a bit concerned, but it was really good to meet other families who are going through the exact same things as we are and even 2 other queer couples.
We are *so* close to getting our paperwork finished. I'm waiting on my partner's birth certificate, and physical paperwork, and for both of our therapists to send in a letter saying that we are stable people who are able to parent (sort of annoying because we actually just both go to therapy to have someone listen to us for an hour a week, not for any *actual* issues). And once that's in, and we cough up another chunk of cash, then we get a social worker.
I can't say that the classes were super interesting--- we didn't really cover anything we haven't already talked extensively about.
They have recommended that we get a pediatrician to ask questions to about drug and alcohol exposure before we start being profiled- I'm just not sure how one does that- most doctors I know don't allow folks to "just ask questions" without a patient being attached to them. Any suggestions?
Re: Homestudy Classes
I think some pediatricians will meet with you, just explain that you are adopting and looking at interviewing possible pediatricians as well as having a resource for questions regarding possible health issues.
I know there are doctors that specialize in helping people with their international adoption referrals, perhaps they also handle domestic adoption questions too? I would start with your agency and see if they have any recommendations.
Hmmm, maybe start with your insurance company and see if they have a list of providers. I don't know what a doctor would charge for a meeting/consult, but in the future if you like them and wanted to use them for a pediatrician then you know you would be covered.
Also you could look in the phone book/Internet, call, explain the situation and see what they say. It could be a good way to weed through and find someone receptive to being a good resource for you.
I hope you find someone, hopefully someone that has found one already might post on how they found theirs. : )
