Painful PIO Shots

Any advice on how to help ease the soreness after my PIO injections? Everything was going smoothly with them and I was relieved until they upped my dose from 1cc to 2cc. My poor cheeks are so sore! Is there anyway I can alleviate this? Should I ice before or after? Is sitting on a heating pad okay?

Re: Painful PIO Shots

  • You definitely don't want to ice at all.  It's oil, so warmth is what you want, to help it spread out.  A heating pad is a great option.  Also, just make sure to rub the area for a bit immediately after the shot to help it spread.  I forgot to do that during my first couple of shots and ended up with painful knots.  Just rubbing seems to be helping now.

  • Don't ice! I use a heating pad but I'm not going to lie I'm still in a lot of pain too. Make sure you're giving it to yourself in the right spot. Good luck!!

  • Don't inject your cheeks is my best advice! You want hip! Not butt cheek! Seriously, it will cut the pain down to almost nothing!

  • I was allowed to ice but I had to warm it up right after, like take a hot shower.  And rub the area.  Still hurt a little but nothing that would stop me :)

  • The massage after the shot was the only thing that made mine feel even a little better. But I'll tell you the truth, I think they get a little sore and achy no matter what. Good luck!
  • 1. Warm the oil in your bra for about 10-15 minutes prior to injection.

    2. At the site of injection, have whomever is injecting you DIG their nails in. Seriously, it will take the edge off the needle sting. There will be so much going on there on your cheek that you won't be able to focus on the shot itself.

    3. Bend over the edge of a bed or couch for your injection. Put all of your weight on the leg opposite of the side getting injected. Keep the injection leg completely weight free and relaxed as possible.

    4. After the injection, put pressure on the needle site, and then rub for about 5 minutes!

Those are my tips & tricks for PIO.

    Good luck!

  • I found it helped me the most to 1.hold the syringe in my or DH hand once the oil was drawn up for 10 minutes or more (I tried warming the bottle and didn't work as well for me) 2. Make sure you have all the muscles relaxed at injection side. 3. Warm after with heating pad.

  • So I disagree with other posters.  Here's what we do:

1st, make sure you are getting it in the right spot.  Draw (well, have your DH draw) a cross on each cheek, dividing your tush into 4 even quadrants.  The injection should be in the outer/upper quadrant, closest to your hip.  The nurse drew circles for DH after ER and he's just kept re-drawing them daily :-)

Ice for 2-5 minutes before the shot (until the skin feels numbish)/while icing, one of us holds the syringe to warm up the PIO

Wipe injection site with alcohol wipe and let dry

Inject, not quickly, but not too slowly either

Massage with gauze for 5ish minutes

Sit on heating pad (on medium or low) for 15ish minutes

I'm still a little sore, but nothing unbearable.  Hang in there!!  Hope your butt feels better soon!
