Preemies

Clogged Tear Duct and Sick Husband

My son was born 5 weeks early - he's almost 3 weeks now. About a week ago, he got a clogged tear duct and his dr. prescribed erythromycin which seemed to be working until yesterday when he eye started producing twice as much discharge as it did when everything started. The dr said this is common with preemies, so we just have to be patient, but do you have any other solutions? (I've tried breastmilk and might go back to that.)

Also, my husband has a cold - runny nose, sore throat. How involved can he be with my little one while he's sick? Thanks!

  • My LO has had the gunky eyes her entire life thus far.  I do the breastmilk about once a week and massage the area on her nose near the ducts.  My pedi said not to worry its just a preemie thing.

  • One of my girls has a clogged tear duct.  We wipe her eye with a warm wet wash cloth when the gunk gets too much.  Pedi said it is common in babies (not only preemies) and they grow out of it.
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
