We are going to let our baby's gender be a surprise but we're having a tough time with baby names. We haven't had an "A-HA!" moment with any name yet, but after seeing many of the traditional and crazy baby names out there, we keep going back to Aurora or Sydney for a girl and Layne or Julian for a boy. We are looking for something different that's still a name you see occasionally. We aren't telling anyone we know, so maybe this will help. Any other ideas along the same vein are welcome. Thank you!
Aurora Catherine (girl) - Nickname Rory
Sydney <middle?> (girl) - Nickname Syd
Layne William (boy)
Julian <middle?> (boy)
Re: Don't know gender - Aurora vs. Sydney, Layne vs. Julian
Aurora for the girl
I like both boy names but ONLY if spelled Lane. Layne looks so feminine. I think I slightly like Lane more. It used to be one of my favorites.

Same here!
Aurora and Julian are definitely my favorites.

I think Aurora Catherine sounds nice and I like the NN Rory.
If it's a boy, please use the spelling Lane. I like Julian better though.

Pinterest: LO ... somedayAurora Catherine is very pretty!
I like Lane William (spelled this way).
Sydney and Julian for sure...both names are in our top 5
Our pair ideas with these names were Sydney Joy and Julian Oliver.

I don't like either of your girl names. I find Aurora difficult to say, and there is nothing attractive at all about Sydney, IMO. If I was forced to pick one, it would be Aurora.
I love both your boy names, but I agree with PP - drop the "y" in Layne. It looks very feminine.
this.

I like Aurora for a girl and Julian for a boy.
Sydney is okay but I'm really not a fan of Layne for a boy.
Aurora and Julian, hands down.
PPs have some good suggestions for MNs, but if you want to stick with your top names here, I think Julian Lane or Julian William would work just fine.

I would assume Layne was a girl but I really like Julian.
I don't really like Aurora or Sydney - just NMS - but I prefer Sydney.

Aurora by a landslide. I've never liked Sydney.
Layne over Julian. But, I much prefer the spelling Lane.
Anxiously awaiting baby #1! Baby BOY Due: May 30, 2013!
I love Aurora!
As for your boy names, I like the combination of Julian William. Not a fan of Layne, especially spelled this way (seems very feminine).
I love Aurora and like Julian a lot.
I don't care for Sydney or Layne at all. I find both to be gender ambiguous, and in either case not particularly attractive.
I was very confused by your title because I assumed Sydney was a boy and Layne was a girl. I much prefer Sydney for a boy and Sid isn't remotely feminine. I think Aurora is very pretty and will grow well with your daughter. Rory is a nice spunky NN.
I'm indifferent to Layne and Julian. I think Julian Layne would make a nice combo.
Your boy names are NMS.
I really don't like the name Aurora. Sydney is NMS but I think it's an OK name otherwise so I would choose Sydney. I know of a couple girls with that first name. I think Sydney Catherine sounds great together for the mn.
Layne or Julian are also NMS. First off, I'd spell it Lane. The 'y' makes it too feminine IMO. Otherwise, I don't really have a preference. I think you could use William with either name for the mn though.
It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
