If we're in the bathroom, I sit it up on the counter or in the bathtub. Aria hasn't found the one under the computer desk yet... she gets distracted by the rolling chair. Same goes for the kitchen... she hasn't realized there's a trash can there because she's fascinated by the dog crate next to it.
We don't let him in the bathroom or kitchen to crawl around, really, so those are OK. Other ones, I am just constantly redirecting, too. Hoping it's just a phase.

The ones in the bathroom are under the counters, and have been since before Anna was born thanks to curious cats. My kitchen trash can has now been moved to right outside the garage door!

The only reason Abby is interested in the kitchen one is because its stainless steel and she can see her reflection. Though she typically is more interested in the sliding door to the deck right next to it. She hasn't discovered any of the bathroom ones yet.
The kitchen trash can isn't an issue...I don't think he's ever even noticed it. The bathroom can and the one in my room are little ones so they're at eye level...and he's definitely interested in those. I tend to re-direct where those are concerned. However, flame away, but I've had tap his hands quite a few times if re-directing doesn't work (which most of the times it does). He's testing me a lot here lately...I"ve got a strong willed little guy on my hands!
Thanks to our dog, who has had a tissue obsession since puppyhood, all the trashcans in our house are on elevated surfaces, or closed-off rooms. We only have 4, come to think of it. It's awkward to keep the trash cans on the toilet tanks, but it prevents the dog from eating all my "i'm allergic to dogs" tissues.
And it works for DD, too.
