Parenting after a Loss

Two Questions UPDATE

Hi ladies :)

So, I have two questions: one is about my one month old (yay for reaching a month!  Hope to post a pic later :D), and the other is about my postpartum weight.

ONE. UPDATE --> some new massages has helped a good bit, and I'm getting some gas drops (as well as a rock and play) today (5. Dec.) :D

My poor guy has been having some rough past couple of days, in regards to gas and what I suspect is some reflux.  We switched to a sensitive formula weeks ago, and he seemed to be doing much better on that.  But in the past few days, he seems so sensitive that if you don't burp him several times during a feeding, he'll projectile spit that stuff up about half an hour later!  Plus, he only wants to sleep inclined, whether it's on my (or DH's) chest, his swing, or the carseat.  I'm trying today to lay him on his back in a cushy chair next to me, and he's woken up twice in what seems to be uncomfortable pain.  I thought things were on the mend after two/three days of burping him more, and letting him be inclined as much as possible - but last night he woke up several times just screaming, and even had one hard piece of stool (when all the others have been very soft).  I'm starting to think I need to give him something, just to make him comfortable, but not sure what.  Any suggestions of some gas-relief meds?  Or advice?  Should I ask him to be seen by hid pedi sooner than his two month checkup? (he doesn't seem sick, pr really in pain per se, just really uncomfortable!)

TWO.

I'm not sure if it's because of the hormones, or my lack of time, but I've gained back ten pounds in two weeks.  And I promise it's not because I'm overeating - in fact, I've been struggling to eat.  Whether it's because I'm simply not hungry, or struggling to eat with one free hand - my diet has been mainly small bits of finger food (a lot of string cheese :/ ).  Plus I've been walking, and conditioning my body back into shape with simple pelvic exercises, and ab tightenings (but I'm still having some mild discomfort, and need to take both ibuprofen and Tylenol every day).  I think it's because 500 calories of string cheese a day is not cutting it, and I need to eat something more - because I think this is waterweight/bloat, trying to make sure I have enough energy to take care of my baby.  So I'll be working on that of course, but I was wondering if this could also be hormonal - did any of you gals loose a lot of weight, and then turn around and gain half of that lost weight back??

Thanks in advance for any advice/insight/help you might be able to provide :)

Re: Two Questions UPDATE

  • Yeah I think I might call the pedi tomorrow, if anything just to update him on what's been going on and see if it warrants a visit :)  I think he's okay - not sick - just really uncomfortable.  But hopefully we'll get it figured it out soon ~

And as for the weight, I'll work on drinking more water, eating more consisitently and adding something besides string cheese to the diet ;P  I think I'll just have to eat whenever my DH is awake (and can take care of DS if he starts getting fussy).

    Thanks for the advice :D

  • I second the gas drops. The generics are so much cheaper than the brand name ones. We get the Target off brand. It doesn't rid babies of the gas, but it makes the bubbles smaller so they can pass it easier. If his stool remains hard, and you think it might be too hard for him to pass easily, my pedi has us giving him 2 oz/ pear juice per day. It's a lot milder than the prune juice method. We started him off with just an ounce to let him acclimate. We have E on soy because while we saw some relief with sensitive, it wasn't enough.

I definitely recommend the Rock N Play as well. We used that for E, and still occasionally use it when his burps are stubborn and don't come out or he's gotten sick. It lets him sleep at an incline.

  • I plan on getting the gas drops today, but luckily, I looked up some massages for gas relief, and though I've been doing some of them - I tried a new one late afternoon yesterday, and he's had two large (but super soft) BM's since then! :D

He's still got a bit of uncomfortability (hence the gas drops I'll be getting today), but he hasn't spit up in twenty four hours either, so maybe I don't have to hound the pedi about reflux concerns after all - but we'll play it by ear, and see how the next few days go.

I really think I'll be getting that rocknplay today as well ;)  Beats the carseat on the bed, before the hubby comes home from his nightshift!
