Scooter/balance bike/ride-on for 2 yo

"Santa" is considering getting DD a mini-kick scooter and helmet for Christmas (but man, is that expensive!). If I do, I know her 2 year old little brother will want something similar.

What would be good for a 2 yo to use a little this winter when there's no snow, and then in spring/summer? 

Any helmet brand recommendations for either the 4 yo or 2yo? TIA.

    DH bought our 2 1/2 yo DD a radio flyer scooter and we have a helmet already for her, but we bought all sorts of shin and knee and elbow pads to go with it. You can call your local police department, and they might be able to recommend (or some departments give them away for free under certain grants) a helmet. Our police department does a bike and helmet safety demo and will even fit the free helmet on your kids head for you. You have to make sure that the helmet fits properly because if it slides back too much, well that strap under the chin can choke. I am hesitant to let DD use a scooter because she is an air head sometimes and I like her knees and elbows with skin on them, but other kids seemt to be just fine. The one we got her has a wide platform for her to balance on, rather than that inch one older kids have.

    We have 6 neighborhood kids (all 2 - 3 year olds) that all have Striders bikes.  They are $99 and help the kids learn to ride a bike without having to go to training wheels.  They are pretty cool and the boys in our neighborhood LOVE them! We are thinking about getting one for my daughter too.  Here is the website...sorry if it's not a clicky:

    We got DD a Strider balance bike last summer (18 mos), but she wasn't ready for it, as she is very cautious. She does, however, love her Schwinn helmet. She wears it walking around the house/neighborhood, in the stroller, and in her buggy. I'm sure people think I'm an overprotective parent making her kid wear a helmet every where. DD also loved the cozy coupe she tried out in the store a few nights ago.

    DS got a Strider for his 2nd birthday. He loves it. Best gift we have ever bought for him. He is a pro at it and even lifts his feet off the ground while riding now. He's 2.5 now.
