Cold meds for 4 year olds?

Does anyone give over the counter meds to their 4 year olds for stuffiness? I know its still below the suggested age. I've given Delsym for coughs and some homeopathic stuff (didnt work). Just curious if anyone has tried a low dose of cold medication. Thanks

Re: Cold meds for 4 year olds?

  • I have. PediaCare makes a multi-symptom cold medicine for 4yrs and up. Her doc is ok with it also. Though, it's one of those things where sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't.

  • I've given a small dose of Allegra and it helps a lot.

  • NO - it is not recommended for kids under 4 and honestly, not worth the risk.  I have yet to give them to my 6 1/2 year old and I honestly rarely take them.  I give them a spoon full of honey at bedtime and use a humidifer if really needed.

  • Our doctor has said it was fine for her to take 1 tsp of the cold meds that say 6 and up w/a 2 tsp dosage.  We've done that with great success and it helps her from being miserable.  Many of those medicines now say they're not for under 6, even though a few years ago they were fine for younger children.  I think with all the accidental overdoses there have been, they make it older to be safe than sorry.  It doesn't appear to be an issue of it actually being harmful, in the correct amounts, for younger ones....it's just that some people inadvertently gave their kids too much or too frequently.  Be vigilant and you should be fine!  (But ask your dr first just in case!)
