Goodbye to fresh-squeezed orange juice?

I think I already know the answer to this question, but is it OK for me to freshly squeeze my own orange juice and drink it while pregnant? I was shopping today and bought a whole bag not really thinking about the whole pasturization thing. I guess I don't get how it's any different than peeling the orange and eating it, rather than juicing it and drinking it right away?

  • You can make your own juice -- it's just like eating an orange. Try to stay away from nonpast. juice you buy in the store.

  • I don't see any problem with it.

  • It is just like eating an orange if you drink it right away. You'll be fine.
  • Your kid will turn out orange.
  • Of course you can drink juice you squeeze out of an orange on your own -- it'd be just the same as eating the orange.  Now, I wouldn't squeeze a whole bunch of oranges and stick a pitcher full of juice in the fridge to drink over a few days -- the juice might grow bacteria (since it's not pasturized).

Enjoy your orange juice -- sounds yummy, and I'm jealous!

  • How is this possibly any different than eating an orange??? Common sense people.

  • Good question! I was about to buy fresh OJ from our grocery....big sign near it mentioned it wasn't pasteurized. Glad I saw the sign, I really wouldn't have thought about it.

I would squeeze fresh at home and drink it right away, just don't let it sit out. You have the control over it, so it would be like eating a fresh orange.

    Enjoy!

  • I agree with what the other people said.  As long as you drink it right away, it should be fine!!

P.S. I'm sorry that some people were a little rude to you! It was a good question :)
