I'm currently being seen by the lone star midwives have absolutely no complaints. I'm 18wks plan on a natural birth without meds. I'm aware that St Luke's allows for this but am curious of anyone's personal natural birth experiences there. I would like to know about techniques used during labor delivery. How much the hospital staff is involved. This is my first so any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance
Re: Any personal experience at St Luke's hospital?
I delivered all of my kids at St. Luke's, and had the last two with the Lonestar Midwives (Jan for one, Lauren for the other). I had a great experience every time. The nurses were very helpful and respectful, no one pushed any meds on me. I was set up to receive an IV, but didn't have it attached until after I delivered, for fluids. I was able to walk around, get in the shower, use a birthing ball (they have those there for you, no need to bring one). I was able to labor and deliver in any position that I wanted (felt better to deliver on my back for some reason, though I labored on my side).
If you choose to breastfeed, they have lactation consultants on site to help you, and the nurses can help, too. I will say that with my second baby, I only saw the consultant once, and it was when the baby wasn't even in the room. By the time I called her again, the nurse told me she was too busy. Didn't matter, I knew I didn't produce any milk, I was just hoping magic would strike and I could actually breastfeed a kid (I have insufficient glandular tissue, can't produce milk). If you don't choose to breastfeed, bottles are available to use.
I generally found that the staff is as helpful as you need them to be. Very helpful the first time, a little helpful the second, by the third I was like, "I'm good, no help needed!"
My second was born 30 minutes after arriving and was not a good experience. The nurses were pretty witchy and made several inappropriate comments. They really treated me a an object to perform procedures on instead of as a person. They disregarded several requests I made for water, started an IV instead of just a hep lock and blew out the veins in both my hands during the process. My DH isn't the best advocate and due to my labor being so quick my doula missed my birth. It was a pretty negative experience. I do believe that a lot of the bad things I experienced wouldn't have happened if I hadn't come in ready to push. If they could have found my chart and looked over my birth plan I do believe that I would have been paired with a more natural birth friendly nurse and could have advocated for myself better. I do understand that my 2nd birth they considered it to be an "emergency" situation.
Both my post partum stays were wonderful and their lactation consultants were great. One of them truly saved my breastfeeding relationship with my first. After all of my experiences there I would choose to deliver there again if we lived closer and we weren't done having children. Good luck
ETA I didn't have pain meds for either labor. I did have Pitocin with my first since my water had been broken for 17 hours. If you're looking for someone to support you through your labor you might want to hire a doula, because some nurses are great at helping out but they won't be with you the whole time. I delivered with Lonestar OB/Gyn so I'm not sure how much time the midwives spend with you. I know the OBs really just come in to catch the baby.
I finally got a schdl with lonestar midwives after 2 unreturned phone vm, and 2 days of trying to get some at the office to schdl me. The front desk lady said they have been busy.
My appt is about 3 weeks from now. I am excited! I really just want to know how far i am along, since i was irregular prior to finding out that we are pregnant.
My stomach is not really big, it only bloats up when i drink water. LOL!
