Question about insurance

Hey everyone! I have been out of the forums for a while. My partner and I were starting the TTC process and then I lost my job crap!. I will be the one carrying BUT at the moment I have not insurance. Is there anyone out there who has experienced this? Anyone have luck with individual insurance? Any suggestions???

Re: Question about insurance

  • Many plans don't cover infertility anyway unless you are lucky. If you can afford insurance, however there is more of a chance to have some coverage (screenings, bloodwork, etc.). Did you look into cobra from your previous job? Being pregnant without insurance may be sticky unless you have enough money to pay out of pocket....

  • I'm self-employed and pay OOP for insurance, as it would cost more in federal taxes to be on my wife's insurance. I had a catastrophic plan until the month we started ttc and then bumped it up to a plan with maternity coverage because pregnancy is still in this grey area for per-existing conditions where they would have covered my prenatal care but not my delivery unless I had that level of coverage beginning the month of my LMP (glad I did as we got pregnant right away!) I would definitely look into COBRA and private insurance to get you through until you get another job (if that's your plan).

  • This is great! Thank you so much! Never too much information!
  • I am not sure exactly where you are located but I know for a fact in Texas, independent policies do not include maternity or any fertility.  Even my private insurance through my company covered no fertility so that was all OOP.

In order to get maternity insurance on a independent policy where I am from is almost impossible.  Most companies will not allow it added or if they do your monthly costs will triple or deductible will be around 10K before coverage.  It's not ideal.

I know a lot of OB's have a cash discount plan that offers patience without insurance a much better rate to pay cash.  Now you will have to pay all things at time of service.

The medicare option is there.  If you can pay OOP to get pregnant then you would be able to file no income and pregnant to get WIC and medicare.  I am not sure how ethical this is though.  I personally would not be ok going this route.  I would rather wait until I could get coverage independent or private.

That sucks you lost your job!  I hope you are able to find something soon that has coverage so this becomes a non issue for you as ttc is emotional enough alone.
