To say that I am angry right now is a gross understatement.

DH took R for his 15 month well-baby visit this morning. The appointment was at 8:20, they were the first ones in the door, the first ones back, yet the doctor did not arrive in the room until after 9. They had NO RECORD of R having his 12 month shots - I have a shot record here at the house that says otherwise. Since they had no record, they thus gave him six shots today. The same six shots he recieved on September 4th. I called the office this afternoon after DH got home and told me what happened, and I didn't get to talk to anyone. A supervisor is supposed to find out what happened and call me back.

Obviously, the shots are already given and there's not a thing I can do. I fully intend on speaking to someone at their office tomorrow - and I don't intend to hold anything back. I have considered writing a formal complaint letter to the supervising office. I'm also heavily considering swapping pedi's - if they can't keep any better records than that, why should I trust them with my son's health and ultimately his life???

I'd be switching peds and finding out if I need to be watching for anything since he was given double the vaccines.

yup, this. And I would write the letter to the higher-ups. People make mistakes, but children's health isn't something I'm prepared to be very lenient on.

If they weren't sure he got the shots, they should've held off on them until they had confirmation one way or the other.
I would be majorly PO'd.

Exactly this. This is common sense. The bad record keeping aside, the fact that they didn't have any common sense and gave your son double vaccines is unforgivable. Switch immediately. And report definitely.

ditto PPs. I'd probably be on the phone with a lawyer too. That kind of medical negligence is unforgivable.

I do agree that this is poor record keeping, however, having worked medical for a long time I can tell you unless its different in the us that there is not much the supervisor can do except apologize. You can make a formal complaint to the college of physicians though that will go on the pedis official record and an investigation will be done. If it makes you feel any better, getting the vaccines twice won't hurt your little one!

This would actually make me feel a lot better.

But still, that is really lousy record. Plus thats an idiotic thing to go ahead and give them again. Make another appointment for goodness sake, at least until they get the records straight. I am pissed for you too because my old pedis office did this same thing but it was only one vac. I'm still pissed about it. These people are professionals and you are paying them to take care of your kid. Ditto on all the complaints mentioned above.

I would still complain. Make sure it's on record. Chances are if it's happened once, it's happened more than once and next time the mistake may not be harmless. For that reason I'd bring it to the attention of the office manager, the higher ups at the medical group, etc.

I would be highly upset, and ditto to the PPs. I would complain and find a new pedi ASAP. That's ridiculous. They really should have just held off, until the could verify if LO has had them or not.

I would find out what the heck happened for sure. I would also report them to the appropriate places and switch pedis.

Not trying to sound like a b!tch, so don't take offense when I ask this. But if your H knew he got his 12 months shot, why didnt he speak up and stop them? He was concerned enough to come home and tell you, but I feel as though he should have said something while at the pedi. Unless I'm missing something.

Either way, you have every right to be p.o.

First off, I had a similar experience, BUT I had just switched pedis because we moved.. They said she didn't get 1 shot and said they could do it then. It wasn't that I didn't believe them, but I needed to make sure that she, infact, did not receive it. So I said no that I'd research first and if so they could give the shot to her at 15 months.

Secondly, your H had no idea if R had received shots or not, and didn't think he should call you???

thirdly, you are right you can't do anything now, but when I posted about O and the missing shot record, some ladies here said it was perfectly safe that she get that shot more than once. Anyway, I would talk to someone about records and then either switch because I would be afraid of what else they would forget.

The pedi is part of a network of doctors and on their website they have a "Contact Us" thing. Here's what I submitted.

My son R is a patient at the Kids' office where Dr. A and Dr. N practice. Today he went in for his 15 month well-baby visit. I was told at his 12 month visit on September 4th that he was up to date with shots and that he would not need any more aside from the influenza vaccine until he was two years old, thus I did not send the shot record to his 15 month appointment. My husband took R to the appointment today, and to his surprise, R "needed shots" because he "didn't get his 12 month vaccines". I have a shot record that states that R received them on September 4th, but apparently they did not enter the information into their systems. As a result, he received six more shots today. These were shots that he clearly did not need, as he already received them three months prior.

In addition to the extra shots, my husband and son waited over 45 minutes in the exam room, waiting for Dr. N to enter. The appointment was at 8:20 A.M. They were the first ones in the office and the first ones taken back to a room, yet they waited over 45 minutes to be seen. I find that to be utterly ridiculous.

Would you recommend (doctors' office) to others?

I would under no circumstances recommend [doctors' office]. My son received a second set of vaccines that were completely unnecessary. He received six shots in September and the same six shots in December. Consistent and accurate record keeping is an essential part of any business, especially for a doctor's office. I cannot trust that my son is being adequately cared for if the staff fails to enter information as important as vaccination records into their system, showing that my son has had his shots.

There is also a blatant disregard for punctuality. Patients are expected to be at the office no later than 15 minutes after their appointment time - otherwise, the appointment must be rescheduled. Patients should be able to expect that the doctor would also be punctual - particularly when their appointment is the first scheduled for the morning.

* I still plan on writing a formal letter as well.

At his 12mth apt you were told he was up to date and he only received his flu shot. 2. In that same paragraph you state that you have records he received his 12month shotS. Plural 3. You then go on to state you have record of him getting THEM. So which is it? He got just the flu shot at 12months because that is what was suggested to you or he got all of them because that's what your records show? What does your memory say? Also, if my DH were in this situation he would text or call me beforehand questioning the whole thing.

I think she was saying that *after* he received his 12m shots, he was up to date, and would only need the flu shot at 15m? That's the way I understood it, anyway.

ETA-Sami, you were right to complain! I would be mad at my husband too though if he didn't call me from the office to question what they said. I would also be mad if our office routinely did 6 shots at one time-that's a LOT!

Usually you have to sign before they give your LO any shots. If your dh did sign for him to get them, then I would definitely still complain, but I wouldn't take it to the medical board, etc.

Perhaps this isn't true everywhere? I have never been asked to sign anything prior to LO getting shots.

He got 6 shots at his 12 month appointment on 9/4. He didn't get his flu shot until October. After his 12 month appointment, he was supposed to be good on shots (the baby immunizations, not the flu shot - which he will get yearly) until his 24 month appointment.

I've never had to sign for R to get shots either. I've just been told "at this appointment, he gets X number of shots".
