Both of my girls were sent home on friday with them. We have never had to deal with them before. We did the Nix, thought they were gone, but when they went back to school yesterday, got the dreaded call that no, they were not gone. We have been combing like crazy, but nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Lice. Anyone had to deal with them and have any suggestions.
I haven't had to deal with this yet, but I know it can be such a pain. My mother is a hair stylist and said you have to stay on top of it for 2 whole weeks during an active infestation. Do your kids still have adult lice or is is just nits left over? I am not sure why they would send them home for nits, because that is just part of the process of lice. You kill the adult lice then retreat 7 days later to kill the nits that have hatched. Sounds like you are doing a good job at trying to get them gone with the combing every night to remove any nits. Keep that up and then do the retreatment and hopefully they will be gone by the end of the week.
Like I said I have not had to deal with this yet (almost every child gets lice at least 1 time in their life) so I am not an expert, but I would recommend a product I use for prevention called Fairy Tales. I use their shampoo and conditioner on my girls with every bath and I also use their leave in spray conditioner every morning as a detangler and it also helps to prevent the lice. With girls try to keep their hair either up in a pony tail or you will need to put a spray in their hair/mousse every day. Lice like clean heads. So using hair sprays and mousse deter the lice because they cannot move through the hair easily. I use the leave in conditioner to detangle every morning, then pull my girls hair up into a pony tail and then I use the Fairy Tales finishing hairspray to spray the bottom on the pulled up hair, the nape of their neck and the back of their ears. Lice love the back of the ears and nape the neck because it is warm.
Here is the website for Fairy tales they also give tips on preventing lice and dealing with an outbreak. Good luck, it can be so hard to get rid of sometimes from what I hear.

you can't just treat the hair
everything NEEDS to be treated- bedding, brushes, stuffed animals, towels, rugs, etc.
It you don't you are just going to keep reinfecting. I worked at a summer camp for 5yrs. We dealt with it EVERY single summer- multiple times a summer. sucks.
a big thing of Cetaphil cleanser worked into and through the hair all the way to the scalp until it is basically dripping out. Comb through until you get as much out as possible and then blow dry until very dry. Let it stay in overnight and in the morning, wash it out and comb. Another thing my pedi office recommends is taking olive oil and again, getting the whole head totally wet from scalp to ends and then wrap that in seran wrap and a towel and let it sit for 7-9 hours and then comb out completely and then wash/dry with hot.
Both of these will basically drown any live nits and the combing should get the rest out if you do it all very carefully. The 2 times my kids had it the store bought chemicals did nothing but these methods both worked (we had done the chemical thing and got no where and then did the olive oil and it worked but daycare never got 100% rid of the lice and my kids got it again a few weeks later and we did the Cetaphil and it worked. We were told to the Cetaphil or Olive Oil treatment a few times a week apart just to make sure.
