Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Pointing?

My LO just turned 1. He walks, babbles, reaches, claps, and waves but he does not point yet.

Does anyone else have a LO not pointing? When did yours point?

All of the milestone charts say he should definitely be doing this so my FTM mom self is nervous!

TIA!

Re: Pointing?

  • DS started pointing around 14 months. I can usually tell what he wants so I don't think he had much of a need to point, even now. He still doesn't do the typical one finger point though, he puts his pointer finger and his thumb together to point... not sure where he got that from!

  • Neither of my kids didn't point at 1. My oldest started around 15ish months; my youngest around 18ish months.

Assuming he's hitting all other milestones I would not be concerned. Most kids aren't going to hit every single milestone at the exact time they're supposed to--some might come earlier while others later. It's all about watching the trends.

  • DS started pointing closer to 16 months.  He's 18 months now, and still will sometimes just gaze in the direction when we ask "where is _____" instead of pointing.
  • Thanks everyone! I hate those charts and questionnaires at the well visits. It feels like I'm taking a test!
  • My almost 13-mo-old doesn't point with one finger; he waves at and reaches for objects. But he worked so hard on gross motor skills that his fine motor skills (communication, finger control, etc) got put on the back burner. He's babbling now and figuring out how objects fit together, so I'm sure "true" pointing will follow shortly. I'm not concerned.

  • DD doesn't point either and I told my Mom yesterday that I thought she should be doing it already. I guess we worry too much! If she/he is engaged and reaching other milestones I wouldn't worry. At our 1 year app the pedi only asked if she waved, said mama and dada (she does but not to us) and could get the food with pincer grasp

  • My 18 month old was 16 months or so be she started pointing. Even now she only does it when she wants to..not with any consistency.

I don't worry about it. She'll walk to what she wants, direct her eyes when I tell her to look and stick out a fist as "pointing" so whatever.

It's not really a skilly I practice either.

  • DS just started pointing this week.  13 mos.

  • My LO also just turned one year old and is not yet doing the traditional index finger pointing.  He does a whole hand point, but that just started. In fact, my LO didn't even wave or clap until the week before he turned one!
  • DS isn't even close to pointing.  Not worried.

I'll tell him to grab his paci or cup and he is able to identify those things which the pedi said was normal for this age.  Also, he knows to bring you what he wants too, like an empty cup when he wants more.  I consider that success in our book, haha!

  • Our LO just started a month ago (14 months).  I was also worried about it when his doctor asked at his one-year exam.

  • So yesterday I posted that my 12-month old wasn't doing traditional index finger pointing yet (just whole hand pointing) and -- BOOM -- all of a sudden today he started doing the real deal.  I wanted to update because it can happen overnight!
  • A started pointing around 18 months, and he's fine. I think the concern is joint attention, which can be demonstrated in other ways than pointing.

  • Don't get nervous. All kids do things at different ages. DD has been pointing for quite a while now and it's not all its cracked up to be. Lol. I know she's little but when she points at people in a grocery store it makes me feel weird! Haha.

  • DD started pointing right around then.  I didn't realize but we weren't really pointing a lot so she had not reference.  I started pointing to things more and so did she.
