Owl has her RC evals tomorrow and I'm sitting here looking at a word count that needs to be done before we go in and I have no idea how to fill it out. It gives a bunch of words and asks me to mark if she says the word and to give an alt word if she uses one. Now that she is phonating, she doesn't spontaneously say words, she will mimic when asked to but only has a couple clear words.
Do I mark all the words she mimics? Only mark the one word she uses spontaneously? Mark only the words that are understandable?
Re: RC Word Count Help
I would mark all the words you have heard her say and maybe asterick the ones that she says spontaneously (or whichever list is smaller)
I have to do these word count things(MacArthur-Bates) for Nate all.the.time because his school is big on building both spoken and signed vocabularies. I actually keep two seperate lists one for Spoken English and one for ASL.
Nate's spoken words are easy to count because there are so few, but his sign ones got a bit tricky. I did little mini tests for him while he was sitting in the high chair after lunch. I would collect a bunch of objects or pictures from the inventory list and hold them up.
You could start with a few things in front of her and you model the words "Where is the pen?" or "Put the pen in the box" then, once you know she understands the words ask "What's is this called?" for each item. I have also found the bright baby board books very helpful for this task by pointing out pictures and asking "What's the sign for this? or What is this called?"
Have fun!
ETA: For his spoken english words I check off the things he has vocalizations for if they are consistant and then phonetically spell what he says next to it. "Car" is "CAH" I just noticed today that he definately says "stop" but from him it is "CAHp" with very little "p" on the end. It definately has a unique sound and inflection so I am gonna count it for "stop".
