Who has been induced before? Please tell me your story

I have gone ahead and scheduled my induction with my Dr for next week- 12/13, so a few days after my due date. I do hope that the baby comes on her own before then, but we'll see. I know that induction is a hot topic on this board, so I was hoping that some ladies may be willing to share their experience- positive or negative- so I have an idea of what to expect. How long does the process take? Do you have to stay in the hospital from the time the induction begins (mine is scheduled at 6am) until the baby is born? Pain? Complications? Anything is helpful.

TIA!

  • I asked this same question on the multiples board yesterday and got a few interesting responses if you want to go check it out. I'll be interested in seeing the responses over here...good question Smile

  • With DS, I was induced at 40w5d due to low amniotic fluid and contractions. balloon catheter inserted to dilate cervix to 3cm was very painful but short. That started at 3pm, the catheter fell out about a half hr later. They started the Picotin drip after that, epidural went in around 7 pm, pushing started at 1am and he was born at 4am. Complications included me having to put on an oxygen mask at times because his heart rate was fluctuating.

  • I had to have an overnight induction because my cervix was not 'favorable' (I had no progress stall).  So, try and follow this time line:

8:00pm go to hospital, get checked in and settled, doc inserted cervadil. 6:00 am remove cervadil, I took a shower. 7am IV started and pitocin drip started. 8am doc broke my water. By 10:00 cx were 2 minutes apart. 12:30 I got some pain meds(Stadol?) 2:00pm epidural placed, 4:00 pm another dose of meds in epi. 5:15 I was at 10cm and started to push. Epi wore off by 6:30 and DS was born atb6:46pm

so, not including the cervadil treatment I was just under 12 hours from start of pitI in to birth, including 1.5 hours of pushing.

I'm being induced tomorrow (this time with out the cervadil) so we'll see how it goes this time- good luck to you!

  • I was induced with LO1 at 42 weeks.  I went in at 10 am and started pit.  Slow contractions, not much dilation, upped the meds about every hour. My water broke on its own at about 3 pm.  At 8:30 pm I started pushing.  Baby came at 11:30 pm.  We had to use vaccum on baby and we both spiked high fevers due to pushing for so long.

This time I have a new doctor and the plan is to be admitted at 10 pm on the 5th, start cervidil.  Get pitocin started at 6 am and she'll break my water between 8-8:30.  Hoping for a baby before noon!

  • I was induced with my 2nd baby at 39 weeks and I went in at 6am. By the time they broke my water, I had her by 2pm that day (less than 4 hours), 1.5 easy pushes and she was out. It went sooo smoothly and everything went perfect! I had an amazing experience getting induced, hence the reason I am doing it again this time around

  • With my first, I didn't need to do the overnight portion since I was already favorable- 3cm dilated. I showed up at 5am to do some paperwork and get ready, at 6am they started the pitocin. Endured till about 9am when I had the choice to either get the epidural then or wait till 11am (since the anesthesiologist had two back to back c sections coming up). I opted to start it then. My doctor came by at noon and I was barely a 5, so she broke my water. By 6pm I started feeling a ton of pressure and was at 8cm. By 9pm I was 9cm with a lip. They turned off my epidural so I could feel to push. . .only problem was I pushed for 2.5 hours!! So by the end I basically had a natural/pain medicine free birth which I was not looking for. My son was born at 11:40pm. So it was a long day.

  • At 41 wks they started an induction.  I went in at 5 pm and was admitted and had the cervadil inserted.  At 7 am the started the pitocin.  There were cx on the monitor but didn't feel anything.  At 6 pm I was at 1ish cm so they stopped the pit.  The next morning the put the pit back on.  Around noon I was at 5 cm so they broke my water.  At 6 pm I had no more progress so we headed to a c/s.

  • My first two pregnancies were natural (not induced) and very painful...delivered with no meds. The last two were induced at 38 weeks with Pitocin. I was already at 3cm when induced. My 3rd was induced at 7am and delivered by 2:30pm the same day... my 4th was induced around 8:30 am and delivered by 5pm the same day. I did have epidural with both inductions so it was great as I felt no pain. In my experience, the inductions were much easier than the natural births. Both induced babies were over 7 lbs and 20 inches long at birth and very healthy ;) I was in the hospital for 2 days and yes, once you start induction you stay in the labor and delivery room till you deliver...in my case since I was induced with Pitocin, it's via the IV. Good Luck!

  • I was induced at 40w 2d with a fairly favorable cervix (4 cm dilated and 80% effaced). I had been having contractions 7-9 mins apart for a couple hours before the Pit was started at 7:30 AM, contractions were 5 mins apart by 8 AM. They broke my water at 10:30, got my epi at 11:30. Fully dilated by 1:30 PM, started pushing at 2 PM and he was born at 3:29.

Hope all goes well for you next week!

  • I was induced with LO #2 a few days after my due date and I was 2cm when I went in the night before around 10PM.  They placed the cervidil around midnight after getting an IV with antibiotics started (I was GBS+) and by 2am I was uncomfortable with contractions so they checked and I was 4 cm and I got an epidural.  They didn't place anymore cervidil or even do pitocin because my body took off on it's own...just needed a little help to jumpstart it.   And in fact they gave me a shot of terbutaline around 5am to stall labor and "restart" it because my contractions were on top of one another.  DS was born at 9:55 am.  This time, if I go the induction route, since I"m already 3 cm, she'll have me come in the morning and start me on low dose pitocin to get the contractions going and labor me down a bit (babe is high) and then break my water and likely have a baby by the afternoon.

  • I was induced with my third pregnancy and it went really well.  I got to the hospital at 6:00am and I was already 5cm dilated.  I think they started the pitocin right around 7:00am and my son was born at 9:45am.  Things went pretty quickly and easily.

My first labor was semi-induced.  My water broke and then 12 hours later I still wasn't having any contractions so I was given pitocin.  That was a lot slower process as I was only a fingertip dilated when my water broke.  It took another 13 hours for me to have the baby after they gave me the pitocin.  But, I had both babies vaginally and consider the inductions a success.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • 1st induction took greater than 24 hours. Had to keep turning off pitocin due to HR not picking up on monitor ended up being a problem with the probe but considering they were inducing me for a possible heart defect they wanted to be safe than sorry. Contractions were never too bad as i got an epidural prior to breaking water (~16 hours in) Major pain was from pushing/tearing our first LO had a huge head and needed forceps to deliver.Pushed for almost an hour. baby went to NICU due to concerns for heart defect but only stayed long enough for an ECHO.

2nd induction started at 8am delivered at 459pm. No problems with HR and baby's monitor strips looked great. Ended up with more pain this time-mostly cause i tried to put off epidural (last time i completely stalled after my epidural) leading to ~30-60 minutes of contractions every 2 minutes at 8/10 :( but epidural was perfect after placed went ~1- more hours then pushed for 15 minutes and done.

both times just had pitocin. had to stay in hospital the whole time due to needing to be on a monitor.

  • I just wanted to comment back to this after reading it waiting on being induced for high bp. I made a note to come back to this lol. My induction just went amazingly... Ftm started last night around 6 with insertion of cervadil which only lasted 2 hrs til I had contractions too close together than what they wanted it so it was pulled I contined to contract an I had a dose of stadol worked great but the 2md dose did nothing and before I knew it my water bursted everywhere and we pushed for an hour and he was here at 309 am not even time for any decent pain meds boy that was rough and you don't expect it to go that quick w an induction. We stared dilated to a "12 " and "2050 " effaced depending on who was asking . Hope yours goes smooth!!!

She probably posted from her phone and it doesn't let you use hyphens. She meant 1 to 2.

I totally even knew that it did this but I didn't sleep last night so I didn't think about it, I figured everyone would kind of figure it out :)
