T is limping and crying about it - am I overreacting?

T's babysitter just called me and said that she was a little concerned because T is limping and crying when she tries to walk.  She okay standing up and can put weight on her leg, but it's just when she tries to walk.  Babysitter said she didn't see her hurt herself, but they were dancing and jumping around and everything just before nap time.  She woke up from nap around noon, went straight into her highchair for lunch, and this limping has just been since then, so only about 1/2 an hour or so before she called me.  When shes sitting with her, T is fine, it's really just when she goes to walk.  I called the doctor, who said they would need to see her to tell me anything, and they can see her at 3:15, if I want.  So I made the appointment, and I'm going to leave work early to go and pick T up to bring her in.  The doctor's office said I can just call to cancel if I get there to pick her up and decide that everything is fine.  The babysitter can't see any mark or bruise or swelling or anything.

Part of me really feels like I'm over-reacting to bring her in right away like this, but part of me feels like it's just a $20 copay, I might as well just bring her and make sure it's really nothing.  DH, of course, is concerned that T has some sort of severe nerve damage or hip problem and needs to be treated immediately (he might be a little bit of a hypochondriac whenever T is sick or hurt).

WDYT?  Would you bring LO to the doctor this afternoon?

  • $20 copay is worth it IMO.

My first thought would be maybe her leg was asleep or just that really uncomfortable numb feeling, but that would've wore off by now.

My neighbor's daughter was walking with a fractured leg around one year old, they had no idea for a few days!  (No limp at all)

This was my first thought too, but you're right - it would've worn off by now, and I also don't think she'd cry about that, so it must hurt her.  Poor thing.

  • $2O is worth it for peace of mind. If she seems fine in between now and the appt you can always cancel.

Since they can't communicate what exactly is wrong overreacting is a necessary evil sometimes.

    Hope she's feeling 100% soon.

  • I tend to be a better safe than sorry type mom, so I would probably take her in if nothing has changed by the time you pick her up. I wouldn't panic, though. DD1 did this once around 16 or 17 months and it turned out she just had a pebble stuck in her sock that was bothering her. Even after we fixed the problem she kept limping for attention, little stinker :) Hopefully it's something like that for you, too!

  • I'd bring her in. Unless you get there and really think there's nothing wrong.

20$ is worth knowing for sure

  • I would take her just to make sure it's ok.  I hope she's feeling better by the time you pick her up though!

  • I would take her. If nothing is wrong, at least you'll have peace of mind.

  • not overreacting at all IMO.

I think, as moms, we fear we're overreacting to everything, and alot of other people feed into that feeling ,but i also think we know our kids better than anyone else in the world, so if we think something might be wrong, we're the best person to make that call.

  • Poor baby! I would take her in, too. I embrace my FTM-ness and call the doctor for pretty much every new issue that comes up. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
