Poll: Real or Fake Christmas Tree

We have a fake Christmas Tree and we were going to try and save money this year without doing the real tree as well.

I like having our small fake tree in the entry and a big real tree in our living room.

I am torn about what to do.....

To go cut down your own tree it costs around $50, which we have in the bank at the moment, and it is a tradition that we have done for many years...

Advice please! TIA

Re: Poll: Real or Fake Christmas Tree

  • we're sticking with a small, fake one on a table this year because I am terrified of DD getting into the tree. She isn't crawling yet, but she's pretty mobile, and I still don't have gates or anything to put around the tree.

  • In years past we have always had a fake tree. This year is our first to have a real one, I told DH that once we had kids, we would have a real tree. Ours is a Grand Fir and like 9 feet tall. It was only $35.00
  • Is there something else you'd rather spend the $50 on if you don't get the tree? We're spending xmas day with my parents, so we'll decorate with lights (and my teeny fake tree), but we won't get a real tree until next year at the earliest, since DS won't notice either way (well, I'm sure he'll notice the tree at my parents', but you know what I mean!).

  • REAL REAL REAL REAL!!!!!!

I've had a fake a couple of years but it just isn't the same so we always go to Home Depot and get a 7 ft for about $30.

  • I go the fake route.  I really like the fact that mine is pre-lit (I DESPISE stringing lights on the tree).  And I couldn't stand finding needles 6 months later in the strangest places!

  • we do a real tree, and then we recycle it.  a real tree is a key part of christmas to me, so we make it work.  fwiw, we buy ours from lowe's or home depot and get a very nice one for only about $30.

  • That is what I told DH. It just doesn't seem the same without a real tree. I love going and getting a warm cup of coffee and hiking through the tree farms all bundled up looking for the perfect tree and cutting it down ourselves. It starts the holiday season off with a bang!!!!
  • Real!  FWIW our dd is a crawling and pulling up fiend and she has pretty much stayed away from the tree.

This is exactly what I was going to say.  Zachary really hasn't been all that interested in the tree yet.

We always get a real tree!  It just wouldn't be the same without one.

  • Fake.  SO much easier.

We still go to the tree farm and hike around, get cider, etc.  We just don't have to haul a tree back home!

  • Fake. I wanted to get a real one once we moved into our house and had kids, but money is too tight this year for us to go and cut one down ourselves (I don't trust pre-cut trees to live for more than a week). Our fake is pretty good - the only thing missing is the scent. Hopefully next year we'll get a real one.

Awww, I was originally going to suggest doing what pps said about going to Home Depot or something to save money until I read your follow-up here.  You're not paying $50 for a tree - you're paying $50 for the fun family day and the memories.  If you'll miss doing that, then pay the $50.

We get a real one from a store near us for anywhere between $20-35, depending on what they have and what we like that day.  We decided we'll get a fake, pre-lit one once we're in our next house, but I love real trees, so who knows - we might change our minds!

This is so funny! I think it's a great idea, too. I live in Arizona, however, so the ambiance just isn't there. :)

We do a real tree from Home Depot or Lowes.

  • We are doing fake tree, we'll do real one when DD is at least 1 year old and can enjoy the fun.
  • I like real, but we have a beautiful pre-lit artificial that we got for $200 off on Black Friday last year. And I have allergies, so it has really worked better.
