Trying to Get Pregnant

Chemical Pregnancy ... does it "count?"

Based on my ute size and hcg levels I was told I had a chemical pregnancy and that the only reason I thought to take a hpt is bc we were ttc. I was told it didnt really count as a pregnancy. Let me add that I have a follow up appt with my REI so yes I will be asking there, but I thought I would ask here while I wait. If it doesnt count, do I have to wait to ttc? When I was in the ER I was told a range of answers from right away, to three months to six months. TIA

Re: Chemical Pregnancy ... does it "count?"

  • So sorry for your loss.  My doc told me to go ahead and try again right away when I had a CP.  And as far as it being a "real" pregnancy, yes it was real.  Especially to you.  That sounds a little insensitive.

  • Sorry for your loss. With my first chemical pregnancy I did not wait to try. Then when I had my second chemical pregnancy, I decided to wait one month because I needed a break. HTHs

  • I'm very sorry for your loss and the insensitive comments you received. It was real and it absolutely counts. When I had my c/p my doctor said she wanted us to wait one cycle before trying again.

  • A chemical pregnancy is still a pregnancy.  I'm sorry for your loss and the insensitivity of your doctor.
  • I agree with PPs. Don't take to heart the cruel words of others. They are ignorant to how a woman feels when they realize they are pregnant, viable or not. I'm sorry for your loss.

And to answer the question, our doc said to go ahead and start right away.

  • When I had my CP my dr checked my hcg level to make sure it was down to 0, I was given the ok to continue the next month.

I agree with pp, it does count as a pregnancy, I can't believe the dr said that to you, I am so sorry for your loss!

  • Thankfully it wasnt my doctor who said this but the ER OB who did. At least I wont have to deal with her any further.

  • I am sorry for your loss. When I had a cp my doctor told me I could try next cycle if I wanted to we didn't for other medical reasons. She also said it had no bearing on future pregnancies and is usually just a fluke. And it is a real pregnancy, it makes me sad the dr said that to you.

  • I am so sorry for your loss and for the insensitive comments from the MD.  I have been told that you can start trying again right away, but I would definitely ask the RE.

  • I've had 2. They are real and count.  I'm sorry you were told otherwise. Mine were 2 cycles in a row and we didn't wait to try again.  I wish I had after the second because I wasn't really ready, I just thought I was, so I was very thankful when my period started.

That is a real pregnancy but you don't have to wait to try.

  • I'm so sorry for what you are going through. Hugs your way and hope things turn around soon.

I am new here, like brand new, and I was wondering if someone could explain to me why they call it a chemical pregnancy.? Sorry if this is a really stupid question, or the wrong place for it. I am just trying to learn as much as I can about everything. Thanks.

File a complaint with the hospital.

This. Also it does count! I would go with whatever your doctor says too. Sometimes ED docs just have no clue/experience in what to say. Usually as soon as they find out you're pregnant they send you to OB, viable or not. They just don't do OB well.

  • First of all, I am sorry for your loss.  It absolutely does count as a pregnancy.

I had a c/p back in 2009 and had a similar experience by being told I was never pregnant.  Um, yes...I was.  I also had a miscarriage this July and it just really, really sucks to go through any type of loss.  I am so sorry.

If it helps you feel better, I did not wait and got pregnant with my daughter the next cycle.  Just do what feels right but it isn't absolutely necessary to wait unless your doctor (RE) prefers you to.

  • So sorry for your loss. I had the same thing happen in July. I had to go back to make sure I was at 0 then I had to wait until I got AF.  Good luck and hopefully you get all the information soon enough.

  • I am sorry for your loss, and the insensitivity you have been subjected too. I have not suffered a loss, I can only imagine how you are feeling, and then to have someone say that on top of it, yuck.

I wish you good luck when you decide to TTC again!

A chemical pregnancy is when you get a + pregnancy test, but you're too early to see it on an ultrasound. After you can see the pregnancy on an ultrasound, it becomes a clinical pregnancy.

OP- I'm so sorry someone said that to you. I was told the same thing with my first c/p and it left me confused for a long time.

    Thanks!

  • My first pregnancy was a chemical pregnancy and my doctor counted it. As for the ER doctor they sound horrible. very sorry you are going through this.

My chemical pregnancy I had to deal with someone else other than my primary since he was away. She told me I was never pregnant and I probably read my pregnancy test wrong. I nicely told her I can see two lines on 5 test and can READ the word pregnant and told the office she was never to treat/talk to me again.
