Parenting after a Loss

Back to Work

So, I went back to work today. It was not as bad as I anticipated. It's hard to leave, but DH is home with G and I work within walking distance from our house. I feel very fortunate.

My biggest worry is running out of BM. I just don't want G being over fed while I'm away.

So my question is, how many ounces is your 3 month old eating per feeding? G is prob around 14 to 15 lbs.

At 3 months DS was eating 3 oz bottles. There is a great calculator on kellymom for BF babies. It calculates the amount of oz needed per bottle based on number of feedings per day.

That's what I used, too, to calculate how much DD should get when I'm away! GL! And so glad to hear it wasn't too bad.

  • At 3 months when I went back to work p/t, DS took (and still takes) up to 3oz. He's not consistent because he disapproves of bottles, but when he has a good feeding he'll take 3 oz. Interestingly, he goes up to 3 hours between feedings at daycare, while with me he never goes longer than 2 hours between snacks. How does your LO feel about bottles? For us, it seems like he might be eating more per bottle because he dislikes them and prefers fewer feedings.

It sounds like you have a good arrangement though - I'm guessing it will be easier to work out with your DH how much to give her per feeding, rather than trying to instruct daycare. Good luck!

  • Em is 13w, and we're feeding her 5 oz. bottles every 2 1/2-3 hours. She's on formula though, so that may not help.

  • At 3m we were doing 3-4oz bottles every 2-3 hours. I also always send a "back up bottle" of the same size along with her regular bottles. Before I went back to work DD had a habbit of spitting up an entire feeding's worth of milk and then I'd have to feed her again because she would get hungry. I was worried she'd do that at MIL's and then be without a replace meal. I just make sure the bottles get rotated, yesterday's back up bottle gets eaten first thing, so the milk never gets too old.

  • Thanks ladies! DD took two 3oz bottles, one right after the other yesterday. She drinks from the bottles super fast, but usually nurses in slow motion ;] DH is still leaning other ways to soothe her, I always have the boob to comfort her though. I guess she comfort nurses a lot. I'll have him try to encourage the paci today. Maybe have him give two 3 oz bottles with a longer gap between. Thanks again!
