Failed my 1 hour glucose

Well, that was a bust.  Despite it being easy and not feeling any different, I got a 155, and I wasn't supposed to blow 135.  I didn't do a 12 hour fast, but some folks say you don't even need to fast.  I'm annoyed, mostly with myself.  Now I have to do the 3 hour, which I don't really have time for.

Of course, I also don't have time for GD, so there we are.  My buddy says quit eating all sugar and white food for a few days before hand, not to trick the test or anything, but to help get a "clean" reading.

Excuse me now while I think about things I should not eat.

The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

  • Isn't lettuce awesome? Yeeeah broccoli!

Sorry, just trying to throw you some support. That's a total bummer. I hope you pass the 3 hour with flying colors.

  • My OB's office has you eat a high carb diet for 3 days before the fast.  I don't know why, but have heard this helps standardize results for a more accurate test or maybe that it makes your body adjust to producing insulin.  Most diabetics say that what you eat the day before should not affect your reading after a long fast. You should find out what you're supposed to do and try to do what the office says will give you an accurate test instead of guessing.
  • I'm curious what did your doctor tell you about fasting? My doctor said I don't need to fast, but it seems like half of people are told by their doctor that they need to fast. I even called my doctor's office to confirm that I didn't need to and the medical assistant first told me that I need to fast and then she later called back and said the doctor said that I don't because of the test she ordered. I'm so confused! Are there different types of 1 hour tests that they do for GD? I take my test on Friday and I really want to pass.... ugh

I hope your 3 hour goes better!!!!

For the one hour, they did not ask me to fast, which seems to be the common thing on these boards.  Women here suggest that despite not fasting, you don't want to eat a lot of sugar the day of to prevent artificially elevated numbers.  The 3 hr requires a fasting glucose measure as part of the test, so you fast for 12 hours and then have your blood drawn, and then drink more stuff, and have additional blood drawn over the next 3 hrs.

Thanks for the info! I'm trying to limit my sweets this whole week, but it has been hard!

Fasting isn't necessary.  My OB's office tells you to eat a breakfast of something like bacon and to avoid cards and juices.  I most likely won't eat anything just because I go in early and I am definitely a carb girl.

OP, sorry about your results but cutting out sugar prior to testing won't do anything.  My sister did that and she ended up failing the first test.  I am a sugar-oholic and had great numbers (the first time).  I really don't think it's something you can help.

  • I feel your pain! I had GD last year with my son. The initial shock is a lot to take in and very stressful! I hope you pass your 3 hr with flying colors!! I'm sitting here now during my 1 hour hoping I pass. Good luck! Cutting out sugar is not a bad idea, even if it turns out you don't have GD.

  • Hey CageyMack, we're testing buddies!  I had my 1-hour done yesterday and got the exact same result that you did - 155.  I was floored.  And super bummed.  I made the lab technician redo the test "Just to be sure."

I was also told not to fast prior, and I do think that is standard for the 1-hour.

When are you retesting?  Let me know.

Like you, I absolutely don't have time to sit in their office for 3+ hours (even though, in theory, I should be able to work since they have wifi there) so I'm not going in until 12/14.
