3-yr-old eye test? fail! Help?

just went to pediatrician for anual wellness check up for my just-turned 3-year-old. The nurse presented her with an eye test which had 5 shapes, and asked me to cover one of my LO's eyes and tried to have my LO identify the shapes. But the shapes were square, circle, apple outline (very badly done), house and diamond.

Could your 3-year-old do this???

mine totally couldn't and they were all "oh it's fine, most of them can't yet, we'll just test again at 4" but I was like "what three year old can tell you that's an apple, without being told first??" image

  • It's obviously a flower petal. Or bunny ears. Or a heart. Or a mountain. Or...

    Yeah, pretty useless.

  • Wow!  My DD has her 3 year eye test in a couple of weeks.  This ought to be interesting.  DD has a speech disorder and apple is the only one that she would be able to identify and name (besides ball - easier to say than circle; she knows her shapes but cannot name most of them), but that apple is a very sad looking apple.

  • I think that's ridiculous. DD would never comply in a pedi's office doing this. Do they at least do a test run and make sure LO can identify what each shape is? I took DS to my ophthalmologist at 18 months and they didn't ask him any questions, just had him follow lights, dilated his eyes, etc. she said she would never attempt a typical eye exam with any kid under 5.

  • That chart is useless. LO wears glasses. He did do an eye test with a pediatric opthomologist. I was amazed at the process. Just a bit better than this.

  • DS did badly on his too at his 4 yr old appointment.  For the plus sign, he said "arrows", which he said were arrows pointing inward.  I guess, technically, that's true. For the flag, it was a rectangle with stripes drawn across it.  DS had no idea what that was. I begged the nurse to let him use the chart with the letters, but she said it's not appropriate for a 4 year old. Ugh.

  • My 3yr old had a test similar to this the last time he was at the pediatric ophthamologist (he has worn glasses since 10mos old). He was able to do identify most of them. I think he would have said heart for apple. I also assume they take into account similar shape items (heart, apple, etc.) especially if the child is consistent with the answer.  I think 3yr old is when they try this sort of test (symbols vs actual letters like we would get - the test is totally different if they are non-verbal or too young to know shapes).
