Westminster Kaiser/ Good Sam moms

Hi all,

My Ob is through Kaiser, and set to deliver in February at Good Samaritan in Lafayette.

I am wondering how this works. I know there are many hospitals that would like to give everyone the drugs so they don?t have to deal, but I would like to do this as natural as possible. Do I even bother with the birth plan? Do I give it to my OB even though I know the chances she will be there are slim to none? Do I hang on to it and just give it to the hospital? Or do I just put DH on standby as bouncer if they try to talk me into it. I know that I am not going to be at my strongest then, but I really don?t want to go down that path.  Any thoughts or  suggestions?

  • St. Joe in downtown Denver is also a Kaiser hospital.  They want you to go to Good Sam b/c the OBs at the Westminister Kaiser have practice rights there.  If you aren't really all that picky, especially since the odds of actually having your OB deliver LO is pretty slim (whoever is on-call at the time will deliver you), St. Joe's is much more natural friendly.  I'm a Kaiser patient also and plan a natural birth.  We live in Arvada so it is a bit of a drive but I think it'll be worth it.

  • I delivered at good Samaritan Lafayette and had a wonderful experience. I would just give your birth plan or bring it with you and make Dh in charge of enforcing it.

They don't push you into anything and they support you. Try not to worry too much. Also..it is not a good idea to have a long complicated birth plan. Things always change and you nneed to keep the health of the baby in mind.

  • I haven't given birth at Good Sam yet (baby is due end of January), but my husband and I have taken a lot of classes at Good Sam and done a few hospital tours and had a chance to talk to the nursing staff a few times. I've found everyone to be very open-minded, and Good Sam even has a "Birth-by-Design" form that is a birth plan they encourage you to fill out to help them provide the care you desire. I was told the best way to ensure the birth plan is followed (given the health of mother and baby are ok) was to have a talk with the nurses once we are admitted, rather than just assume they will read the sheet. I've found the staff to be very open and receptive in my questions about laboring, and in fact, because of this, have pared down my birth "plan" (I say this loosely because who knows how birth will really go!) to only things that are absolutely important to me, like keeping my placenta. I suggest going on the tours and speaking directly with the nurses  - it will help you determine your comfortability with giving birth at Good Sam. My husband and I have been very impressed so far!
  • I don't have Kaiser, but Good Sam is AWESOME! I had my daughter there a year ago and am delivering there again in April :)
