BLW

I'm guessing most on this board have introduced solids at this point.  We started LO just shy of 6 months.  I like the idea of BLW, but have always had this question:  If you are supposed to introduce foods one at a time and over a few days, how do you go about feeding LO's "some off of your plate" when you don't eat the same thing every night (at least I don't)...or even only eat one thing a night.  Admittedly I haven't read up on it as much as I should, and being lazy clearly isn't paying off right now Smile , but does someone have a quick/short answer for me?

Re: BLW

  • I'm not strict with one new thing at a time, if lo was to have a problem I'd just take everything away and introduce one new thing at a time.
But I'm not doing well with blw, I can not watch lo as closely as needed when dh works at diner time four nights a week and its just me and lo, my two year old and my 8 year old. I am putting mashed foods in front of him and letting him self feed or putting a puree on his spoon and letting him feed himself.

  • We are doing sort of a combo of purees and blw. I only space out foods that are more allergenic- berries and such. We are holding off on highly allergenic foods like nuts and fish.
  • Thanks for the reply - right now I've been handing her things I'm eating (in appropriate sizes) because she is definitely interested, but rarely do those things make their way into her tummy anyway, she mostly likes to feel the different textures in her mouth and then let whatever it is slowly ooze out of her mouth...so we're doing purees as well, those she eats, though still not in huge amounts.
  • Same here. I found with purees, if I give him half pouches of 2 kinds of food, he will eat more than if I try to give him one whole pouch of something.  What he tends to eat equals about 1 4 oz pouch probably.  He actually loves oatmeal and will eat a LOT of that if I feed it to him.  I do the same thing with any purees I make him, like bananas.  I have some little 2oz containers that I put the bananas (or whatever I've made) in to portion them and will make him just that container with something else.

We have also done the puffs and yogurt drops, both of which he likes.  He also kind of likes the mum mums (and truth be told, so do I...it's a texture thing lol).  He has a feeding disorder, so we have to be really careful what he gets so he doesn't choke, so I am very careful to make sure things are cut into even smaller pieces than he probably needs them to be.

  • We tried BLW but I was way more nervous about choking than I thought I would be! I am not worried about allergies so we don't space out foods. We feed her what we eat, but I always cut it up into small pieces or mash it. Unless you have a family history of food allergies, I think it's ok to mix foods. Our pedi said it was fine, just no nuts because they are a choking hazard.
