Hi everyone,
I have a 29 weeker who is now 27 months old (actual).
He turned 2 in August and we referred for speech. He had his evaluation in September and finally started services in November after being on a waiting list. He's had 3 sessions total and the therapist says he's a joy to work with, but he should be much further along that he is. He only says 2 words consisently (dada and no). He can comprehend almost everything we say, but he is way behind when it comes to expression.
Anyone else deal with this? Was your 29 weeker talking at 2? I feel so bad for him because he gets so frustrated because he can't communicate his needs. ![]()
Re: 29 weeker with speech delays
DD wa a 24 weeker and had a significant speech delay too. One thing that helped her a lot was "Signing Time," a series of DVDs designed to teach kids sign language. It was recommended by her speech therapist and we were able to borrow them from the local library.
Even if you don't do the videos, like PP said, using sign language can help. Check your library for some kids' sign language books or videos.
My 29-weeker is only 9 months, but I have a hunch we'll be in the same boat... he still only coos rather than doing babbling with consonants (e.g. he doesn't do any repetitive babbling like babababa).
Some preemie mom friends recommended something called "It Takes Two To Talk" ( https://www.hanen.org/Hanen-Resources/Resources-For-Parents/It-Takes-Two-to-Talk-Parent-Resources.aspx ) as a great resource for speech delays (I think you can either sign up for a program led by therapists, or get a book and DVD and follow it yourself at home).
