C-sections

First c-section--couple basic questions

Unless breech baby suddenly flips I'll be having my first c-section next week. Couple basic questions:

How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds?

How long until you can hold the baby?

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH??

How long until you can feed the baby?

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born?

Thank you!

Re: First c-section--couple basic questions

  • My memory is a little hazy, since it's been 6 months now, but as best I remember, you can eat about 24 hours after the CS,and you do start out with clear liquids, then move on pretty quickly to regular food from there.  I am pretty sure my second meal was regular food.

I was able to hold the baby almost right away.  They did whisk her away to weigh her, clean her off, and wrap her up, and then she was in my arms while they were stitching me up.

I can't remember if I fed her that night or not.  I know babies usually care about sleep more than food at that point, but I might have fed her once.  Really can't recall that one though.

It didn't take long at all, maybe 10-15 minutes.

    Good luck to you!

    1. My csection was at 6am and I was able to eat solids by 6pm I want to say? My docs kept changing their minds. I honestly wasn't hungry before then though.
    2. My babies went to the nicu shortly after birth, so idk the holding them answer, but my DH held them almost right away in the OR.
    3. I was too drugged to keep track of time. It was quick though.

  • How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds? It was a couple of hours that I had to wait until I got broth and then a little later until I got real food. I would guess that I was eating within 12 hours.

How long until you can hold the baby? I held him in the OR. Check your hospital's policies.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? MH held him in the OR

How long until you can feed the baby? I fed him within the hour

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born?-I went back to the OR around 12:45 and he was born at 1:32. I don't think they started until 1:15. With my first, he was an emergency and he was out quickly.

-I was able to eat once I could keep water down, it was about 6 hours. I had Schlotzkeys.

How long until you can hold the baby?

-As soon as I was stitched and stapled up they gave me the baby and wheeled me to recovery where I immediately breastfed.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH??

-As soon as she was cleaned off, weighed and measured, they have her to my husband.

How long until you can feed the baby?

-I was able to breastfeed as soon as I got to recovery.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born?

-Mine was a failed induction so they decided on a c/s after 21 hours of labor. They decided on the c/s at 2:15 a.m., she was here at 3:02. So that was prep time, taking me to the OR, getting the spinal in and doing the surgery.

    Thank you!

  • How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds? I was able to eat pretty soon after. As soon as I was in the recovery room, I was given clear fluids, water and apple juice, to see how my stomach would handle it. After an hour of no issues, I was given the OK to try out solids. I stuck with a fruit plate for lunch, and was chowing down on a cheeseburger and a celebratory slice of cheesecake for dinner. I didn't get really hungry until dinner, which I had around 9 at  night.

How long until you can hold the baby? I was able to hold DD for a few minutes in the OR once she was cleaned up. She had to go to the NICU for about an hour though. If she hadn't had to go, I'm pretty sure I could have kept her, or had someone hold her while I petted her until they were done with me.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? Unless your LO had to go to the NICU or something I can't see why not! My best friend was in the room with me and got to hold her and bring her over to see me. My hospital greatly encouraged the parents to hold the baby as soon as possible.

How long until you can feed the baby? I was able to try feeding her as soon as she was back in the room with us.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born? I was very nervous about the procedure, so my friend kept talking to me to keep me occupied. After the curtain was up and the procedure was underway, it felt like we had only been talking for 5 minutes before a nurse came up and said " I don't want to interrupt you ladies, but you're about to have a baby!" After what seemed like another 5 minutes, baby was out! I'm sure it took longer than that, but it seemed to go by so quickly.

  • I was allowed to eat/drink whatever I wanted as soon as I got to my room, which was about 2 hours after DS was born.  I had started vomiting from the spinal block before surgery even started and continued vomiting on and off for about 6 hours, and I still wasn't put on a restricted diet.  I tried soup and crackers for lunch, but they didn't stay down.  The nurse thought the morphine pump was making things worse, but I couldn't take oral pain meds until I stopped vomiting.  It was a vicious cycle, so I decided to have the morphine pump stopped and lived with the pain until I could take oral meds.  By supper, the vomiting had been under control for 1-2 hours, so I ate a normal meal (hamburger, fries, fruit, chocolate shake).

I held DS as soon as I was wheeled into recovery, so about 20-30 minutes after he was born.  As soon as I was settled, the nurse helped position DS so I could breastfeed and have skin-to-skin contact.

DH held DS as soon as the APGARs, wristbanding/alarm, length, weight, and footprinting were done and DS was cleaned up.  (All of that took less than 10 minutes.)  DH brought DS over for me to see and then took him to the recovery room while my OB finished stitching me up.  No nurses went with DH and DS, so DH complained later about trying to keep the hat on DS while holding him because the hat kept popping off.

    See previous answer.

It took about 10 minutes for the spinal block to get administered and for me to get situated.  (DH was in the "recovery" room until right before DS was born because they wouldn't allow him in the room while I was getting the spinal block.)  Once my OB checked to make sure I was numb, DS was born less than 5 minutes later.

How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? The meds can affect your appetite. I was told I'd be on a liquid diet for a day, then got a plate of spaghetti. The nurses assured me that's what the doctor had ok'ed.

How long until you can hold the baby? This varies. My arms were tied down, then really shaky. It was probably an hour after birth, maybe 20 minutes after they took me to recovery? I don't remember.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? Unless they have to take the baby to the NICU for some reason, DH should be able to hold LO.

How long until you can feed the baby? It was about an hour after birth for me, but depends on the hospital.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born? It takes a loooong time to prep for surgery. Then they get you in, get everything is set, and it's over before you know it. I swear it was less than 5 minutes from the time they cut me until I heard DS. Then they stitch you up - maybe 30 minutes? It will depend on the doctor, your body, etc.

  • How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds? I had c/s at 9am and was able to eat bland food at supper time, around 5 or 6pm. Had some water and juice before that.

How long until you can hold the baby? Held baby in OR and then again for the entire time in recovery.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? DH held her after I did in the OR and carried her to recovery.

How long until you can feed the baby? I tried nursing in the OR and then again in recovery.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born? I was at the hospital at 7:30 for a NST, waited a while to get into a room, got hooked up, hung out for a while, all hell broke loose, and baby was born at 9:12 or something. So I have no idea how long it was from the time they wheeled me into OR to the time she was born. It was pretty hectic, and the longest part was waiting for the spinal to take. Maybe 20 minutes? ETA: 20 minutes includes placing the spinal. Making the incision and taking baby out takes only a few minutes.

I gave birth at about 9 a.m., and I remember I was able to eat a real dinner that same night. Not liquids. Thank goodness, too, because I was *starving.*

How long until you can hold the baby?

After he was out, they let me see him and kiss him. Then they weighed and measured him and took his foot/finger prints and did whatever other medical stuff they needed to do while the doctor was stitching me up. The stitching process took about 20 minutes and then I was able to hold him.

    imageNicoleWI:
How long until you can feed the baby?

After they returned me to my room, a nurse came in a few minutes later. She gave him a quick sponge bath and swaddled him (and maybe did some other medical stuff, I don't exactly recall) and then gave him back to me and I was able to start nursing him then.

From the time I got the spinal injection to the time the baby was out - probably about 15-20 minutes. After I was numb, the baby was out in no time! The most time is spent waiting for the spinal to take effect and then being stitched up afterwards.

  • How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds? I ate toast with peanut butter about an hour after leaving the OR.

How long until you can hold the baby? I held DD while they were wheeling me down to the recovery room. Once we got there, I nursed and did skin to skin.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? DH held her as soon as she was born and they wrapped her up. He held her up by my head.

How long until you can feed the baby? As soon as I was in the recovery room.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born? My entire surgery was about 45 minutes long, I'm really not sure how long it was until DD was born. The c/s was unplanned and everything was a blur.

  • I will give you both my experiences b/c both were differant.

Unless breech baby suddenly flips I'll be having my first c-section next week. Couple basic questions:

How long after the procedure can I eat?? Can I eat normal food (i.e. more than broth/jello) or not for a day or two? I know I will be hungry after NOT eating but maybe I won't feel it due to all the meds?
with each baby I had to call my OB's office and tell the nurse I was ready for solids b/c the nurse's wouldn't do it b/c they have a 24 hour policy.  I'm sorry you can't make a pg person who's been eating for 2 suddenly stop eating.  Not going to happen.  Thankfully my nurse understood.

How long until you can hold the baby?
Our first two as soon as baby is cleaned up, weighed and done with apgar testing (10 mins maybe) they had baby straight to dad who brings baby to me to see :)  As soon as I'm stiched up and propped up, I held baby down to recovery.  We got an hour with them and then baby and daddy go to nursery for about an hour to get a bath and get observed.

NOW THIS HOSPITAL, baby doesn't leave your side, she is immediately placed skin to skin to you and everything is done bedside. You hold her from the OR to recovery and all check in procedures are done in the recovery room next to your bed so, the nurses come to you :)

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH??
Hubby was always the first one's to hold them.  At our last hospital, daddy carried baby down our first to recovery just b/c I was afraid I was going to drop him b/c I was so drugged up (emergency c/s) but the second one I carried.

At this hospital If I'm not able to hold baby they highly encourage dad's to do the skin to skin since mom can't. :)  And check in is still done bedside.

How long until you can feed the baby?
I was able to the first time in recovery once I was sat up, but it was my responsibility to do it (they weren't very bfing friendly)

This hospital, they encourage it and chart it for the LC's if you were given the opportunity and able to BF in recovery.  It's encouraged so as soon as you get into recovery. They will have a nurse there to start helping baby latch on.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born?

My first was a differant story it was emergency everything happened in less than 10 mins but again it was emergency.

I know with this one and our second you get there at 5:30am surgery doesn't start until 7am   Once the procedure starts, I would say a matter of minutes. The longest part is putting up the curtains, making sure your numb and stitching you back up.  Honestly after you hear baby scream, everything else is a blurr....You watch in amazement, and see that first special bond between child and daddy (I love it).  The look on his face and bringing baby back to you is priceless :)  I love that he gets to do everything first with them just b/c I carried her and felt all her kicks, but daddy gets that first "cut the cord, first hold etc".  It's great!  His reaction and smile and "proud daddy" moment is priceless in my opinion.

Once baby is out and getting cleaned up it's maybe 5-10 mins before daddy brings her over, but like I said, I don't mind, it goes by so quick, and him snapping pics away and this reaction is priceless IMO. Plus I get to hold her down the hallway and feed her for the first time. :)

Usually (with my last two) betime baby was cleaned, and they were done with her feet prints, and all that I was done being stitched up.  My dr is very old fashioned and pretty quick (or has been with my last two) so I would say you shouldn't be in the OR long, plus they have so many procedures to do after you, they don't want you in there very long :)

    Thank you!

  • I had DD at 5:15pm, I was able to eat a normal breakfast the next morning.

I was able to hold DD immediately after coming out of the OR, so within about 45 minutes of her being born.  DH was able to sit next to me and hold her in the OR as soon as they got done cleaning her up.  Same for BFing, as soon as they got me out of the OR the nurse was asking if I wanted to BF and we had her latched on.

I think it was maybe 5-10 minutes from the time they started cutting until she was born.  The prep takes more time than that, getting the cath placed, epidural going, etc etc.

How long until you can hold the baby? I was holding LO about 15 mins after my c/s.

If YOU can't hold the baby for awhile, can DH?? DH held him until I got stitched up.

How long until you can feed the baby? Bf'ing started about 20 mins after c/s.

How long from the time the procedure starts, on average, does it take until baby is born? I'd say it took about 10-15 mins.

  • I ate as soon as I got to my room with DD. I actually walked down to the snack room to get it because the nurse said I could eat when I went to get it. Apparently that was supposed to motivate me. I think she thought it would be the next morning or later that night, but I was starving!

I held DD as soon as I got into my room, but DH held her right after she was born. He brought her around the drape to show me. I then almost threw up on her head from the spinal. Ugh.

  • I was told I couldnt get up to see her until the next day, but my daughter was also in the NICU. I said eff that and went a few hours later....bad idea I was in a ton of pain. My DH was able to hold her before they took her out of the OR yes... And as far as feeing I cannot answer that, mine had a feeding tube at first.

My procedure started at about 10:45 and I had her 11:51am.
